The engine can run on either. With the lower octane rating the engine will be more prone to pinking under load in hot conditions which can be compensated by retarding the ignition timing slightly. The amount of adjustment varies a lot from car to car. Some cars nominally set up for 98 octane can run on 95 with no change, some will pink occasionally even with 98. You may also find your car has previously been set up to run on 95. The best way to see if yours can run on 95 is to try it. If you find it pinks then switch to 98 until your next service, and get the garage to retard the ignition slightly to suit 95. Cheers, Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Hi folks, being a TVR virgin, I''m new to this message forum. I''ve just picked up my first TVR, a 1997 Chimaera 400. Awesome!! Why did I leave it so long? Paid £18K for an A1 condition (one lady owner, yeah right) 400 with 12K on the clock. FTVRSH, unmarked? This OK? My question relates to fuel. As I''m not Saddam Hussain, I have to pay for mine. Nr the fuel cap it says super unleaded fuel. Can we use normal unleaded or is this a real no no? I would appreciate your advice. Good to join you mad b''stards, Stouffer.

Can anyone else out there find 98?, of late I've only seen 97. Also, since the demise of leaded theres been a few decent brands of lead additive/octane boosters, does anyone know if the octane levels of these go to 97 or 98+? Sad questions I know, but then that just me
