removing dashtop>>>
Discussion
Has anyone ever removed their dash top - if so, was it relatively easy?? i know its held on by 3 bolts, but in steve heaths book ha suggests that it is very easy to crack the wood veneer of the dash when removing the dahstop unless your extremely careful, and recoments leaving it to the dealer!!! Has anyone had this problem??? is it best left ot a dealer, or is it easy and safe???
thanks
Chris
PS - need to remove the dashtop to trace wire from fuel gauge, oil light and reconnect the cable to the heater control.
I think your question contains its own answer? In my experience you can generally trust the bible.

Fordy - what car are you talking about/ If it's a Chimp, then I took mine off with no problem. There's 3 bolts, one you have to remove the glove pouch in the passenger footwell, then feel inside towards th steering wheel, and undo with a ratchet spanner or summat. The next can be found if you feel at the front of the dash from the passenger footwelll, put your hand up towards the lower leading edge of the windscreen and you should feel a bolt head. The other is in a similar postion, but feeling up behind from the driver's footwell, about in line with the steering wheel and front wheel arch. The top should then come off easily...

When I tried it the two LH bolts were easy to find/remove, but I couldn't find the one on the driver's side. I remember reading that you had to remove the fan grille thingy or something. Anyway, I gave up and lifted the left hand side like a bonnet and propped it open while I fiddled.

I removed mine OK. The LH bolt is the hardest one to remove. It can be seen through the heater vent once it has been removed (vent + pipe). Remember that the nut is welded onto a plate which is fixed to the dash.
On top of the dash there is a box section for the windscreen heater vents. Try puting your arm up and feeling there about 6-8 inches from the door post. Once you've found it it quite easy to undo, refitting takes its time.
Good Luck, Duncan
