There's a thing called an actuator that in effect is the 'pick up' for the speedo. These are well known to be problematic, I would get your dealer to change this first as it only takes seconds and may well be the problem.

Most certainly could. It's kinda like the little bit of metal that you used to have to attach to your bike spokes. So if its not functioning the speedo will be getting no input at all.

I have a problem which sound similar on my '98 Chimaera 450. After the car has been stood for a few days the speedo doesn't work at all then after a few minutes it bounces around a bit then after a few more minutes it works fine. I think it is probably a poor connection somewhere. Does anybody know where the sensor are located (is there really more than one?). I seem to remember a previous posting said it's on the diff.
