I am looking to buy from one of either dealer that exist in the south west/Wales. They quote service costs much cheaper than the rest of you guys have been discussing (i.e. 500 notes per 6k), e.g. i have been quoted minor service (on a chim 4l) = 180 and 380 on a major one.. Other than the location should i be suspicious of lower service costs like this..? Dealers were newton motors (wales), and David hendry in wiltshire.. anyone used either of these dealers.??? cheers J

There are a couple of specialists in the southwest now, one of which is particularly highly regarded. So I imagine the dealers are having to encourage owners back to them with tempting prices.

I've used Newtown. Put my chim in to correct a fault (misfire due to arcing HT lead)and carry out a major service. When it came back, it broke down after about 50 miles. They were very busy and could only fit me in after 2 weeks. Turned out that at the service, some adjustment that should have been carried out was omitted as someone had driven over the required tool and broke it - noone told me though! Not very impressed. For other opinions, speak to members of the TVRCC in South Wales.

I think you need to have a car running costs kitty. Servicing may be £350 ish for a 6k. But, you need to fix things before they break - that's how you keep a TVR on the road - neglect a whine/clonk etc. and the car is more likely to let you down. I recently had rear diff bushes replaced, new brake master cylinder and a clutch master cylinder. You could argue none of these needed doing as the car was driving OK -mistake. For a Chimaera I would budget £1000 a year for servicing (assuming 1 proper service p.a.) and anything left over can be used for a few track days/European blasts. My '95 Chimaera has probably cost me about that much each of the 3 years I've owned it. Trefor/.
