clunk reversing out
Discussion
When I reverse my Chimp (97 16K miles) out the garage of a morning as I let the clutch out there is a clunk as if some slack is being taken up then a little resistance after which, once it has moved, is fine. It only seems to be like this when it has been standing all night, need I be worried?

Yes and no. Some transmission backlash is normal and it always seems worse when things are cold. Combine that with the brakes rusting on overnight and you can get quite a big 'clunk' when you move off. It will happen when the car is warm too, but is much less noticeable. If you find it suddenly gets worse even when the transmission is warm, you may have a problem with the rear diff bushes. They come loose over time and need to be tightened regularly. It is rare for them to fail but if they do the diff will flail about all over the place, not good. These are also symptoms of a badly worn transmission and might be caused by a worn diff or CV joints. But all these major problems take time to develop and would be spotted at an early stage during servicing, so they are not likely in your case. In all likelihood everything is fine.
