Hi Ian ,
A warm Welcome to the group ! I think we total about 8 now.
It will be great when we can organise a track day and finally get into double figures with owners.
Ross is correct when he says check the car over everytime out, I noticed a dull thud coming from the rear of my car on my way home from work on wednesday. Once home, the wheels came off, and I set about checking nuts ,bolts ,Lights etc To my horror the large nuts on the lower rear rod ends had completely loosened off , could this have caused the bad handing at Bedford Autodrome, I wonder? I havn't come accross anything else yet, other than a bit of steering play ,but I know what is needed to be done there.
Ross- if you are interested I made some rear wing stabilisers today, will post pictures later.
Trackdays- would be grateful if any other atoms can make it to Rockingham on the 21st May (friday),book directly With Rockingham. I notice that Bruce is doing Snetterton early in june,I shall book that today, anyone else coming??

Mark,
Do you have "competition rod ends", because on my Atom, the rod ends are fixed with a little metallic thread and it's prevent the BTR to unscrew. Last point, there is little white marks on each end, so that i can easily check if something had moved or not.
I had send a pic to Ross about that, when he had the problem.
Interessant if every one check this point on its own car.

Mine is the same as JP's... now!

It wasn't always so, though - just after the last rebuild!

JP- all the large rod ends (front and rear) are competion spec, my upper rears (small rod ends) are now competion spec as the original ones failed, the front upper and lower small ones are cheapy standard ones that are due for the scrap heap ! does that make sense??
In my factory we use metal markers that are bright yellow, they apply a fine painted line to the metal surface which sets quite hard , I would think that would show up better than the white marker currently used, I will post one to anyone who wants one (in the Ariel group!)

I have a good contact for rod ends if they want to order them.

They are the best you can buy, well the majority of the rally teams use them, and I got a good discount!

3/8 £29.50
1/2 £47.69
5/8 £64.19

All Excluding VAT

The latter normally retails at £95 inclusive so although they are a little bit more expensive they are worth it

Bare in mind that the problem I had wasn't a loosening of the rod end, but simply a failure (sheared) of the rod ends' main thread - no amount of marking or checking would have picked it up unfortunately.

However, given that the main rod ends have been 5/8" thread all round for a while I don't think anyone in this group is likely to see the same sort of catastrophic failure that I had.

That said, I will be ordering the competition spec ones on my new one.

Cheers, Ross.
