Am I to think that my driving technique is that bad or do my tyres let go at every corner ? The difference between mine and Bruces car at Bedford was vast, although in a lower power Atom he was leaving me for dead around the bends. I followed him a few times and stuck to the same line but he just pulled away. Are my Potenza SO3's to blame or am I a shit driver . Please be kind with the replies especially if you have ever followed me around a circuit.

The car is very light, and tyres are everything.

Finding a tyre that suits the car is very difficult, and the SO3's are not the best tyre for most applications.

I intend to use the DJ01's and have a shed full of them

If you want to experiment, give Ears motorsport a ring. They can sell you some secondhand slicks, cut to a pattern if you want so they look road legal, for about £40 per tyre. If you then try these it will at least give you an indication as to whether its you or the tyres......my guess is the tyres

Mark,
As I'm not sure that someone was slow enought to follow you ... perhaps tyres will help you !
More seriously, for track use, it's clear that the S03 are not the best.
In road/track tyres, you have the Dunlop D01J and two Yoko : A032R (medium, not "hard" or "smooth") which is very good, but begin to be "old" (6 or 7 years conception) and the best : A048R.
Problem with A048R : in France and cetainly in England too, the sizes for Atom 2 will be ready only in May (front) and june (rear), and prices are realy hight in particular for the rear (about 370 Euros/tyre in France, in June).
It's clear that if one day you want to fight against lateral G-force, you have to test the Atom with (used) slick tyres, you'll win plenty of seconds on lap times. Take care if you use it on roads because when this type of tyre is not "hot", adherence is near nothing ...

I have a cunning plan ! Fit three small seats to the back of my Atom then I can take the whole family on the track day, the extra weight (and Nagging ) will keep me on the black stuff.
Thanks for the pointers guys,I have started the ball rolling and should have my dunlops fitted for our next outing , Bruce !!

Strangely, I just swapped my 'R's for my wets (Michelin Pilot Sports) yesterday - I have a premonition plus I don't want to risk my supersticky, supersoft, superexpensive tyres on the roads of London!

I'm happy to leave them on for the next trackday for comparison purposes, should it be dry, Mark... After all, I learned to track on crossply tyres that were half their width and made of elastic bands! I should be able to cope with Mich's

You should try mine - Contintental EcoContact - good for economy mind you....

I imagine I'll have worn them down enough to replace them in about 3 years time.

Yep, although still surprisingly quick on the track. But not much use on the road at all.

Anyhow, looks like I'll have to change them now as they got chewed up quite badly yesterday when the suspension collapsed.

So what's the recommendation?
S03 (Bridgestone?)
Dunlop D01J
Yokohamas

I need something that's a good all rounder for the road and track - I'm not too worried about outright grip, anything will be better than the crap they fitted to mine originally.

Cheers, Ross.

Dunlop D01J are similar to Yoko A048R :
They will be both much better than S03 on dry (road or track), similar or better to S03 on "small" wet and (much) worth than S03 in case of aquaplanning risk (depend of your drive in this weather conditions'; if very quiet and reasonnable, no problem, but no track in very wet conditions with these 2 tyres).
Up to you now,
Jean-Pascal

Can someone give me the prices in GB for Dunlop DJ01 :
2 Front 195/50x15 and 2 Rear 225/45(or 40)x16.
These tyres are not imported in France and i don't find prices on the net.
Indications of prices and place where i can buy them are interesting me.
Thanks
Jean-Pascal

Hi All, just returned from the Festival of Speed and want to inform you of a very interesting conversation I had with the man from Toyo Tyres. This chap is the UK Technical Director and proceeded to tell me of the new track day tyre they have just released. It looks very similar to the Formula R Dunlop ,but with less Grooves around the tyre. What was interesting is that they do the sizes that directly replace the 17" SO3 tyre, hey presto !! no need to change the wheels now !, Although I get my dymags fitted in the morning ,bugger again !!! So you guys that have 15 " & 17" wheels fitted ,give Toyo a ring ,it will save you a fortune as they do 'like for like' replacements, and at £95 ea +vat.

Your avin a larf mate !! I suppose if you went for the tractor tyre upgrade it may be possible. I went in the discovery, with the misses and 4 kids. Going back next year without the kids, and getting one of those little corporate boxes near the start line, better start saving !
