I met with someone at the weekend that is trying to sell an abomination that offended me so much I think Ariel ought to know about it!

The factory don't like them much, nor do owners of the real deal. It is a bit of a pity as some of the chaps building the copies are obviously talented but unoriginal in their thinking.

It´s far too embarassing to point you to the website trust me, it´s powered by, I guess, a lawnmower engine as it develops a whopping 20something bhp rolleyes

Is there an email address I could anonymously make Ariel aware of this monstrosity?

Don't people build replicas of all kinds of kit cars and historic cars? Think about the numerous GT40 replicas which exist.

So long as it's not sold as anything other than a replica and no one is misled then I don't see where the problem is.

Patents, copywrite?

You can´t just steal someones design and copy it

What has been replicated which has been patented or copyrighted?

I am sure Ariel would not be that worried. If you really want to then try their website www.arielmotor.co.uk for a contact email.

If you look at the headlights thread under Ariel you will see another similar looking car someone is building.

imitation is the highest form of flattery

Building you own car in your shed out of scaffold poles although still dubious *if* there are copyrights/patents in place is fair enough. Selling them as a product surely is another matter?

Maybe not, maybe it´s just me but I was horrified that someone would make something that was trying to look identical to an Atom with a 20bhp engine in it and very suspect looking build quality

Are they being sold as 'Ariel Atoms' or as replicas?

If the seller is being dishonest and is trying to pass them off as the real deal then he will be in for a heap of trouble.

If he's selling as a replica and the buyer is aware that what he's buying is not a genuine article then I don't see a problem.

It's still a breach of copyright.

If you write or draw something then you have copyright on it. If someone copies something that has been made from teh drawings then they are in breach of copyright.

How, then, do companies which build and sell replica's of historic cars do so without problems?
