I know we've been here before, but I am going to have a go at this. So two stage question.

1)What fag' socket is the best one? Do I need more than one? Does it depend on answers to question two. What size drill bit!

2)I want to run off the socket glove/body heater. ipod. Intercom betweeen driver & passenger. Intercom between cars (like Bruce's flash set up). (I am not interested in sat nav. I love looking like Tom Cruise with plastic strapped to my leg or better still trying to read an A-Z at 70mph.)

Let the replies roll in!!!! I'm all :ears:

Look here for the previous discussion

and here for the part. I believe it's the item at the bottom of the page.

I think I'll take a peek in a yacht chandlers too. Anything that's not made of non-ferrous metals in this country justs rusts away

I think most have gone for a BMW bike socket, I guess this is available from a BMW bike dealer !

The sockets on the intercom I have (starcom1.com) are made by the same place and have been very waterproof so far. I did not have a drill bit big enough and was too impatient to wait for one so enlarged the hole by waggling the drill around a bit, this was ok for the smaller intercom sockets but would probably end in tears for a power socket.

Getting my radios this weekend (thanks Atomic) and looking forward to trying them out

Cheers

Ben

This is the correct one - and the one I'd recommend.

This is the set up in Richard Mullers car:

The fag socket is for electrical things. Into which he puts a three way adaptor so as to run more than one thing from. The set up underneath is the intercom system cut and bolted into the back of the seat. Blue tac used as a water proofer for intercom system.

Trust this is correct Richard

Seem to be two screws missing since the pic on the atomclub gallery... (in atom mods/cockpit).

Best place to get them from is a Chandlery, something designed for boat use.

Load of places but here's one for starters.

Yep, and re Bruce's comment, two lower screws worked themselves loose (weren't really long enough). Have been meaning to replace them with longer ones, but forgot...and it appears that the two are sufficient anyway.

Finally go round to taking a picture. This is the same Intercom a Richards, i.e. the starcom1, but with the optional bulkhead extension fittings, this means the intercom can live in the 'boot' and the connections are run remotely to the seat back.

I have the audio leads for ipod and phone routed to where the dash would be on the passenger side, both devices living in a bicyle saddle bag.

Shortly I will fit a radio, atomic found these bargains on ebuyer http://makeashorterlink.com/?U1C12189B which seem very good so far (have not tested them extensively as the Mrs' patience when it comes to helping with this kind of thing tends to be a bit short)

My view of the intercoms available is that the Starcom1 is better for a permanent install but the autocom for portability (it is smaller). Functionality wise they both seem to be pretty similar.

Similar?

The Autocom microphones are fabulous! The Starcom ones are adequate... from what I hear (sic)

But then I'm biased...

No problems having a crystal clear chat at, well basically as fast as my car will go !

My next project after the fuel fix will be a Starcom to Autocom lead so that people can passenger in others cars and keep the same helmet kit.

Ben

edited to add I might also make a Starcom to PC lead so I can wear my crash helmet whilst playing racing games / chatting to atomers
