does anyone here want to stop my dad making a big mistake and buying an SLK55? he has a G400 which he drives 95% of the time, so I think he needs something silly (and half the price of an SLK) for the few miles he will be doing in it in a year. if anyone near the South Cambs area wants to give him a ride, you may be doing us all a favour!

Hi David!

Is your dad a hairdresser? I only mention it because an SLK might suit him better than an Atom! Seriously, I think that if he's thinking about a car like the SLK he probably won't want to consider a car like the Atom. But a blast around Cambs with Ben will definitely help him make his mind up.

(Incidentally, that turquoise Atom in your gallery was mine - when it was turquoise...!)

I hate to say it, but the -55 sounds the absolute mutt's (heard it at Goodwood and near fell in love...and I hate Merc's!!!), and it doesn't look bad either...bit hairdressery...but just plant the throttle and watch TVR owners get jealous!!!

It's apparently a better car than you'd think...depends what he's after...the -55 would be comfortable, refined and look good-but-understated. While other cars (let alone an Atom) are likely to be more hardcore...does he want that?!?

Suggestions:-
- TVR
- Boxster / S (I know...but driving-wise it's still the benchmark)
- Marcos
- Morgan
- 2nd hand supercar (NSX/355/911/...)

yup, i know it's a great car, I would definately have one myself. the thing is he will hardly be driving it - he hasa '97 SL500 at the moment, and i think it has done 6000 mile sint he last two years. For this sort of use I reckon an Atom would be better than an SLK. Unfortunately he is a bit of a German car snob (specifically mercs) but I know he also quite likes the Atom, but doesn't actually have any first hand experience of one. I live in hope (I might be able to get insured on the atom too, not much chance on the slk!)

German...Would he consider a left-hand-drive Wiesmann???

Or go the whole hog and get a 2nd hand M-Coupe...then again, probably too "challenging", looks-wise, given how you're describing him (might be unfair, but...)

no i don't think it's unfair! Normally if it doesnt have a three pointed star, a VW or four rings on the front he isn't very interested. this is why I need to expand his mind...

Get him to drive a 2nd hand NSX...German build quality with a lovely engine and impeccable dynamics.

YHM, thanks for the offer, I appreciate it a lot. What model is yours? I'm not too fussed, although I think the only chance will be if the Atom makes the SLK feel slow, any comments on that?

Mine is a Mk 1, 120, therefore it is the slowest atom. I am pretty sure it will make an SLK feel slower, on paper I expect the acceleration figures are in the same ballpark, but lower to the ground and with no windscreen it will feel faster

I have an Atom and an NSX. I can confirm that the NSX is a bit more practical. Engine sounds better too IMHO. You will probably have more joy convincing him into a 911/NSX etc than an Atom? Just convert him one step at a time

Thanks a lot Ben for giving me some time today, I really appreciated it. Thanks also for my first ride in an atom, it's amazing what 120bhp does in a car weighing that little (570kg on the weighbridge for anyone that is interested!). Great car, now I need to work on the father...

No problem at all any time. Likewise thank you for the tractor drive and combine harvester ride. Since climing on one in about 1979 aged 3 I have always always wanted a ride in combine harvester. My Mrs is delighted as I have had something to talk to her about over dinner tonight, everyone's a winner !

Cheers
