More woes of the Atom fuel gague!!! (Para 6)
Discussion
Sorry about the mis-spelling of GAUGE in the title!!
Race Report: 26 June 2005, Donington Park
It’s a beautiful day!
As the sun shone, that man Carvell again put his Shelsley TT on poll position and then pulled another start to finish performance out of his hat! The
Jabbasport-tuned Audi plant didn’t miss a beat. Series competitors are now scratching their heads about how to upset this cars new dominance. Rob Carvell’s 1 minute 16.7 second race lap time stands as a Series record. But there was a real fight for the next five finishing positions in this the second of the weekend’s races.
Sam Blogg sat on the number two grid place fractionally ahead of George Mackintosh. David Harvey had unwisely chosen the practice session to bed in
new brake pads and consequently fell back to sixth spot. Matt Cummings’s Nitron team had worked late into the night to fix the clutch of his car and also to change the Ford Duratec engine in teammate Ben Robinson’s Lotus. Steve Taylor had not repaired his Lotus’s gearbox so didn’t start; nor did Paul Cundy in the Noble M12.
It was a thrilling start with the cars arriving four deep into the testing Redgate corner. Blogg blocked Mackintosh while fast-starting Kerr in the Ariel tried to drive around the outside of the Scotsman’s Elise. And again Blogg fought off Mackintosh who had a power advantage over the Series favourite’s Motorsport Elise. They appeared super-glued together all round the first lap and only with a run exiting Coppice Corner did Mackintosh get on the inside of Blogg. But the younger man made him squeeze past at the turn-in point of Goddards chicane. Blogg drove the wheels of his car but in the end finished fifth, fortunate that his sick engine had lasted the race.
Cummings was bitterly disappointed when an electrical fault stopped his car on lap 7 but words couldn’t describe Kerr’s feelings when he ran out of petrol one lap from the flag. Lesson – don’t depend on a race car’s fuel gauge! (Atom 2)
Michelangelo Segatori had fun with the exuberant Dave Ball who keep his Ariel Atom on the track, didn’t trade paintwork with fellow competitors and inflicted no mechanical damage on his car. He’ll be peeling off that novice sticker soon! Sarah Crowder improved considerably on her times from the day before and took a well-earned Production Class win.
For a few short laps, Mackintosh had the track to himself with little chance of catching the Shelsley. But Harvey got to work and closed the gap. This time the Scot had the pace to keep him at bay. But the black Lotus Elise of Team Nitron driven by karting and F3000 champ, Ben Robinson appeared on the horizon and gobbled up Harvey’s 340R with Duratec-powered speed.
Mackintosh hung on for two laps and finished a car length ahead of Robinson. Now we have another young pretender! Ben Robinson proves that with a reliable mount, he’ll be close to the action at the front. But will that get mean on terms with Carvell?
Next race – Brands Hatch, 20 August 2005.
