The British Police once had a reputation for being the best in the world. Today (29th) I think they justly earned that accolade.

I don't think that is something that can be justly said of the British Police.

I guess you're referring to the tragic shooting of the Brazillian lad.

It's hugely difficult to judge without all the evidence.

Fortunately I only once had to carry a firearm in circumstances where we might have needed to use them. One thing is for sure, your attention and awareness rises to a level I have never ever experienced before and hope I never will again.

It's an amazing adrenalin rush that's quite indescribable.

John,

As a country we are quite rightly proud of the fact that our policeman were unarmed. Something, somewhere has gone wrong. On an Island this size we should be able to control our gun culture better. Carrying guns openly the way police are today after the bombings is rather like shuting the door after the horse has bolted. It does not, for me, make me feel any safer. It only results in what happened on the tube. I do not like to see the photos in the press of massed armed police ranks walking down Londons sreets.

I don't like it either John, it's an horrendous situation but our successive Governments have surrendered our island to uncontrolled immigration.

I'm in no way racist but one of the silent majority. I'm fed up with the loud voices of the minorities and those bent on political correctness, their influence is to great.

Sometimes, when I watch the news on TV, I wonder where the hell I'm living!

JC.. I couldn't agree more. I think that most people feel the same way, but we are as you say, the slient majority.

I would also say that as someone who works very closely with the Police Firearms units on a regluar basis that those men and women have a job that puts them from time to time in a very unenviable position.

The last thing that any of them want to do is use their weapons.

In a world where we can almost get a man into space in one piece without bits falling off the vehicle (is that where all the TVR people have gone?) you would think that we might be able to come up with a 100% successful non-lethal response. That's why I like Tazers, but they're a bit crude. Surely, someone can come up with something better?

Oh, and I can assure you that if you don't like seeing pictures of armed police on the streets, seeing the real thing is even worse. It's utterly pointless. These people want to die. FFS they're carrying bombs - a few shells from a rifle or a glock aren't going to dissuade them. I support our police 100% though and think that catching this cell is brilliant. I hope they have as much success with the others should they exist. And I don't blame them for shooting Menezes - I would probably have done the same under the circumstances given the equipment at their disposal.

Oh, and one last thing. If it wasn't for the UK's policy of allowing in asylum seekers I wouldn't be here. I believe my great, great grandparents were called 'refugees'. Where I live, most people aren't directly descended from romans, normans or vikings - unless they've emigrated to here from Italy, France or Scandanavia. The Somali refugees - including young men of a similar age to the bombers - who live in the housing association flats opposite my house (or flat as JL would have it) are good and kind people. Having spoken to them, they abhore what's going on every bit as much as we all do.

I understand your comments entirely Bruce. As I said, I'm not one bit racist, some of my best friends are immigrants whether black, white, pink or purple.

BUT, in this era where 'political correctness' rules, I do feel intimidated. I believe that many people are afraid to express their views for fear of been accused of being racist.

One of the main reasons our British police force is armed is as a result of successive failures of Governments to do what is right and not what is PC.

There were always occasions when the police needed to be armed but it was more covert or descreet.

As far as some alternative to the gun and the bullet Bruce, quite frankly I don't believe in circumstances where one's confronted with a suicide bomber in a crowded environment, there is an alternative. He or she must be incapacitated instantly and maybe from some distance.

My brother & brother-in-law have just retired from the force, my sister is still in. None of them would dare venture into a discussion on racicism due to the fear they would be accused of being racist, made a scapegoat and dismissed from the force.

PC has forced police chiefs to wrongly dismiss officers so they demonstrate to 'the council for blah blah blah' and other minority groups they're doing their jobs!! I know that for fact.

A hugely difficult subject!.

Just because I think racists thoughts and don't say them out loud doesn't make me racist? Run that one by me again...

No, I don't 'think racist thoughts' either. However, I disagree with our immigration policies.
