Hello!

Took a test drive in an Atom this week. Fantastic!

Have already specked the car out and can hardly wait for the 20 weeks it will take to build. I have ticked the boxes for the MAG wheels and the supercharger. It is very easy to get carried away!!!!

I am aware that not having these two items would save me about 10K. Are they worth the extra? I would expect most of my driving would be on the road with perhaps 5 or 6 track days a year. Any advice would be welcome.

I live near Shrewsbury in Shropshire and own a shooting complex. Bruce Fielding thought it might be nice to get a crowd of Atomists up here for a day out and some shooting. I did this for the Porsche Club recently and it was a huge success.

Please let me or Bruce know if you are interested.

If any Atom owners live within easy striking distance please make yourselves known to me so that we can meet up.

I'm sure you'll find a warm and enthusiatic welcome to this forum David.

The wait is dreadful! I ordered back in May and my chassis comes in hopefully 1st week of September, I believe it takes about a week to complete the build.

I've ordered the 245 and hope to be able to upgrade to the 300BHP sometime later. The 245 provided the cheapest upgrade path to 300!

I'm not that far from you near Bridgend, South Wales.

Keep watching the threads here they're very informative.

Cheers

John

Thanks John,

I may well follow your lead and upgrade to a supercharger and mag wheels further down the road.

Have you checked out the cost of after market upgrades? Is it the same as the list price in the brochure, or is there a premium?

There should be a club for agonised Atom fans waiting for their toys! Some form of counselling should be available!!!

I am already shopping around for all the extras like waterproofs and comm kits. Sad really, isn't it.

David.

I'm already a member of some other 'support' groups

I chose the 245 because I'd love to have the 300 but can't find the do$h just now. The 245 offers the most ecconomical upgrade path to the 300 as the wiring harnes wouldn't need to be changed.

I had lots of help from the guys here and Simon at Ariel.

I haven't driven one yet but have had a good introduction from John Lloyd and completed a track day with him.

One item I'd probably consider at the time of the 300 would be upgraded brakes.

I've done all the research too!

Helmet - I like the ones with flip up fronts and prefer the Caberg Justissimo

Waterproofs - The BMW wear has been highly recommended.

Comms - Autcom seems to be the best.

I would imagine there'd be a good 'turn' to make if someone ordered and sold his place in the queue!! Seems to be quite common in the supercar market. I believe there's a 2 year waiting list for the new BMW M5.

Yes. I have gone for the big brakes etc. Looks like I will just have to be patient like you!

I will have a look at the Caberg helmet. Thanks!

David,

Welcome, I'm a Shropshire lad myself, where's the school?

I would go for a 245 with Mags, four pots all round and Eibach springs, adjustable shocks, then add the charger later. Traction and braking have more of an impact on speed than pure grunt than most of us would like to admit. The 300 really needs the top grade suspension to contain the madness.

We have just taken delivery of our second one, Puff (a 300 with the spec above), having had a 220 before. Simon's a big fan of the phrase - if you want to go faster than a 220, get driving lessons - there's some truth in it, but better suspension and brakes are a good starting point!

Not driven a supercharged car yet, but adding Dymags and cut slicks to my 118bhp car made a huge, huge difference to lap times.

I can't see that adding 55bhp to a 245bhp car would give the increase that mags give you ...so out of the two options you mentioned, mags will give you more time than a supercharger ...assuming lap times are your goal.

If you want it to sound nicer - go with the supercharger. If you want it to look prettier - go with the Dymags - they really do look the dogs danglies.

Thanks for all the good advice guys.

MC... I live near the Stiperstones, about 17 mile south west of Shrewsbury. We are right out in the sticks, so plenty of nice twisty roads to play on!

PS..Just went to Deemon Tweeks to check out possible gear to go with the Atom..Waterproof etc. Came back with a pair of the new Puma Futre Cat Mid-Pro racing booties (I have a fetish for racing boots)...Very comfy, Lots of feel and they look great!

I will!

I am also a smoker! I suspect that having a fag in an Atom is probably an impossible task fraught with danger and frustration!!
