Hello,

A colleague following me to work today pointed out that my break lights are not working. Stuff I have checked

i) all fuses (does anyone know which one specifically on a MK1)

ii) The connectors in the light cluster, all seem ok

iii) The bulbs, connecting the break circuit to the rear driving light circuit lights them up

iv) The switch at the pedal, not sure what this should do, but it seems to do nothing, thus tried shorting across it expecting permanent break lights but no joy.

Any suggestions ?

Perhaps coming from the switch, easy to control with a "voltmeter", you have to find electricity just after the switch when you press the pedal.
Don't know if my english is clear enougth.
When you put the contact on for the 4 "position" light, is it Ok on the rear , because it's same light as brake ?

Your English is fine. No volts either side of the switch, which I suspect is the problem. This suggests a fuse but I have checked every single one with a multimeter.

Do you mean when I switch on the headlights do the rear lights still work ? if so then yes they do, thus proving it is not a grounding problem at the rear of the car.

I have spoken to Ariel but the electrical guy had gone home (was at 17:30 mind you). I am to try them again in the morning.

Thanks

yes, clear, so switch or fuse is the reason.
I hope it is fuse, more easy to change than brake switch !

Just done some more digging around, and it is definatly the switch, although just to make it difficult to trace the fuse had gone at the same time ! Need to write a cheque to Ariel for £11.75 and then do the nasty job of swapping it

Thanks for your help

Brake lights now fixed. Got the new switch from Ariel this morning, fitted it this evening, it leaked, discovered PTFE tape thanks to a neighbour, reinstalled using crude bleeding technique. Hey presto brake lights.

Now thinking of taking the car on a spin to Goodwood on Friday to test them and use my free Times tickets
