Well, I've gone and dunnit
Discussion
First off I was considering the 220 as follows:
Atom 2 220
Road pack
Limited Slip Differential
Baffled Sump
Comp discs front
Comp discs rear
Comp rod ends
Stainless silencer
Cat by pass pipe
16" wheel pack
Locking fuel cap
Seat coat
Alum gear and brake grip
SVA test
But I wanted to push it to the 245 to make it cheaper to upgrade to the 300 - I couldn't really afford it but just had to do it so, I asked Simon's advice and he replied as below
The 245 differs from the 220 in having not only a completely different ECU (Hondata as opposed to MBE) but also has a different vehicle harness, engine harness, sensors, mount position and so forth. The 220 upgrade to supercharger becomes a 275 and the 245 becomes the 300. While it is possible to upgrade from 220 to 300 therefore, and we have done this on a car, it requires stripping out harnesses plus the cost of a new harness etc. It is therefore better to start with the 245 if you intend to go for the 300 in the future.
So that's basically it guys.
I'm not gonna ask what I've forgotten coz I can't face any more just now - I'm in a spin

Hi John
When I got out of yours well, that was it really. It's like a drug isn't it. Always loved the look of it, loved the chat about and loved the thrill of it.
End of August beginning of September but Simon says probably earlier as they're clawing back on completion times.
Can't wait - like an excited kid!

If you don't want to wait until August / September I may have a solution! I bought the 160 demonstrator six weeks ago and have now got myself a transfer from Scotland to Antwerp. Instead of getting my car converted to left hand drive I am going to get a new car with left and right hand brackets. I'm heading over in July so the car will be on sale from mid-June. Now that would cut the wait and you probably wouldn't lose any money...
Sounds a sensible and well-judged spec to me.
If you can manage to get the 245, its well worth while: the extra power is nice, but the big benefits are the optionality of being able to upgrade to a 300 more cheaply (believe me, I looked at a 220 to 300 upgrade after Simon did the first one: we ordered a new 300!); and not to be underestimated, the engine is much, much smoother than a 220, with a fuller torque curve, which makes it easier to drive, less tiring (less vibes), easier starting . . . (long list which can be summarised as more efficient)
I would add the following, which should cost very little, but make the car more desirable on resale, and you may want to use them:
- Stainless nut / bolt pack. Not lighter, no faster, but looks a pile better in 2 years
- 3", 6 point drivers and passenger belts. More comfortable, locate you better, so you will go faster. Safer too
- Roll mounts, side screen tabs, fire extinguisher mounts, rear towing eye. All bits which are cheap to spec up front and all but impossible to retro fit.
- 12v feed for heated clothing. Get a BMW socket from Chilli and have the factory fit it from new.
- I would also go for a removable steering wheel. Tough to nick a car without a one.
- I would spec the Avon tyres, freeish up front, but you can always wait 'til later. There's a lot of B/S talked about the track spec tyres. They all have more grip than road tyres wet or dry, just that the wet / dry difference is greater, as is the cold / hot delta. In the wet they probably have a few % more, in the dry probably 15% more.
Beyond that, there are piles of things you can spend money on:
- I would think about whether I want 4-pots on the front instead of a stainless silencer. Nothing like being able to stop in a hurry, and they are lighter than the standard ones, so the level of grip is higher.
- Adjustable dampers are nice, but easy to retro fit and really a budget issue.
Sounds great - look forward to seeing you at Atom days: Oh, don't forget the blue strobe on the airbox
