Exhaust upgrade?
Discussion
Yeh i think neons are great too but think they might clip the speed bumps! Joking aside, don't you think the atom sounds crap unless the supercharger is singing to you? I dont want a Peco box hanging off the back of my baby but Honda or Aerial must do an upgrade. If they could hear me coming a bit more it would give them a few more seconds to get thier camera phones out to snap away!
I like an exhaust that has the ability to cruise and idle rather quitely and be very loud upon hard acceleration.
Of various cars that I have owned and helped to modify, I occasionally find the right muffler that will do this on it's own. For my Supra, this happened to be a Magnaflow muffler, which rumbles rather quitely at idles and during cruises but sounds satisfactorily loud when the rpms climb.
For the atom, I have only heard the stock exhaust in videos. It sounds fine as is IMO, but I wouldn't make my final decision until I heard it in person.
There are many kinds of mufflers that are put on all sorts of Honda cars, that you coud start looking for sound clips and videos of for your choice.
I suppose that a custom fit sportbike exhaust could sound very nice as well.
Lastly, with some loss of backpressure/torque, but potential to sound more like a v6 or v8 with Flowmasters and raise your top end power, you could run an electric cutout dump tube just before the muffle and have the dump tube exit so it looked like a dual tip muffler, like this:

Thanks Brian, something to consider. As far as track days are concerned i could always bolt the old one back on! But at the moment it's just for road use. Maybe i just want to drown out the rattles! But i suppose thats part and parcel of the Atom. Any rattle stopping tips from any one? Or should i at least let it run in first? When coasting it's fine, but with any power it sounds like a wedding car with the cans on the back! Just want to get the best out of my baby.
Use Ariel Patented Anti-rattle Cream
(aka plumbers silicone sealant)
It's great on all non-hot items
Otherwise, take a trip to Edgware - www.rubbertrim.co.uk - where you can find self-adhesive strips of trim that will baffle most rattles.
Then there are the factory's own pile cushions - a sort of washer that goes under the clip areas
Then there's aralditing the wobbly bits on the dash
Then there's - oh, I'm fed up with this - do a search on the forum!
Fact is they all rattle. It's part of their charm. You won't notice it at speed. You can drive yourself nuts trying to get rid of them (bit like moles in a lawn) and it won't make that much difference.
Oh, and I agree with Andy - the twin exhast looks much sexier! It doesn't fit, though.
And replacing the exhaust for race days is harder than it looks.

Never noticed any rattles meself.
If you really want a loud zorst, talk to Magnex. They do the best one-offs and custom ones. Doesn't make it go any faster though.
Mind you, if you can persuade them to make a Ti one or a Carbon one, it may save a few kilos in just the right place, high at the back.

Hi All,
Ariel do have a sports exhaust for the Atom 2's, we had it on our 220.
It sounds better that the standard ones but does have problems getting though some of the sound tests as it's a straight though design. You might find you have to add a Supertrap of Merlin pipe on the back which looks stupid without a rear wing to cover it.
They also add a fair amount of stress to the rear box mountings, we had to have our welded.
Most of the issues with the Atom sounding too "normal" at tickover is down to the new Hondata ECU. It's too well mapped!
The older MBE ones burbled away at tickover sounding like they had very hot cams in the engine, rev's going up and down and the odd pop.
Hondata's one sounds like a 1.6 Civic! puuuurrrrrrrr.....
Mind you, the straight though exhaust does sound like god shouting when on song!

The point is that you are driving the car with or without helmet, you hear only the air-intake noise.
I personnaly don't appreciate this intake noise so ihad midified it on my first Atom 220 : a straight Venair 70mm diameter tube, directly in the engine intake and at the other end a JR filter (similar to KN or green). So the air-filter is located near the MBE ECU.
With this modification, i can hear the nice noise of the engine and exhaust, not the intake ...
To my opinion, that's much nicer noise and no dammage for the ear after a track day with no ear protection ...
i have made pics of this and can send it to Bruce if some of you want it on the Atomclub gallery. Very easy to purchase and to make.
