Be prepared for stuff under your fingernails for days...
Let this be a warning. In my opinion, they look better without, so ask the factory to supply you with the plate but not to attach it. It's actually illegal at that angle anyway if the police want to get picky... The rear plate should be securely attached, but the front? There's also the option of the 'hanger-style' plate holder - see pics of the US and Oz Atoms
Should you want a plate to attach in the event of being pulled, I now have a source of plate that is a LOT easier to peel off... The supplier is in the Owner's Club links

I went through the same experience myself last week ...hadn't read the thread, but came to the same conclusion - boiling hot water and scrape away at it, bit by bit - the plastic lid of a "BIC" pen worked quite well. I used 11 pen lids.
The problem with the reflective vinyl is that it isn't really vinyl at all - its essentially glass cast onto foil, hence why its so difficult to unpeel. Road signs use similar stuff. Ask any sign maker - they hate the stuff as it knackers cutting blades in no time. Solution I came up with was to stick the reflective plate onto some standard vinyl, then stick it onto the car, so it can be easily peeled off at a later date. I left a black border round, as I think it looks better, but you you could easily trim it so that no-one can tell there's any other vinyl befind the plate.
