Has anyone with a Mk1 Atom played about with different springs? Spoke to Tom earlier this week about stiffening my Mk1 up for track use, and springs seem to be the obvious answer for getting rid of some of the body roll (no comments about my driving please Bruce).

I've got 9C-0110 rears and 10.5D-0090 fronts at the moment, which is standard fitment for a Mk1. Has anyone experimented with anything else?

I used to just stiffen up the shocks close to the max front and rear on mine when on the track and then soften them up again when on the road.

Do you have adjustable shocks on yours?

Stiffer springs might not be ideal for you on the road given that you use it quite a bit on them.

Cheers, Ross.

Yeah, I've got the adjustable shocks, which made a massive improvement on the track when stiffened up. Even with them as stiff as they'll go, I'm still getting considerable amount of body-roll, and am picking up and locking the inside rear going into most corners. The inside rear then skims through apex/exit, and I have to wait til the car's practically straight before I can apply the power fully.

The Mk2 suspension setup is supposed to be a big, big improvement, as would be an LSD ...unfortunately both cost more than I've got at the moment!

Tom reckons they found chunks of time with the race car through springs, so I'm hoping I can get a bit more out of my Mk1 (part of my quest to beat our Chairman...) without having to spend too much, or decrease the car's value through "molesting" as Bruce would put it.

As for road running - I'd swap the springs the day before each track day, and swap them back afterwards. Some of the roads round Warwick are bumpy enough on even the softest setting with standard springs! I'd urge everyone to have a go at a bumpy country road with the shocks set to "hard" - if you can get over 30mph without crashing or fracturing your spine, you're doing well!

That's not molesting... that's sensible! Fitting a tow bar - now THAT's molesting!

If you want to see what difference current springs etc. make to a Mk1, ask Pete to take you round in his car. That's a Mk 1 with the M2 suspension setup... I guess it could be called a Mk1.5

I think a tow bar's a very sensible idea. If I get much more sensible I'll probably end up buying a Volvo one day when I'm not paying attention...
