As I need to put some miles on the engine, in readiness for Bedford on 5th March, does anyone live within about 100 miles of Guildford Surrey and fancy a visit? I can come over during the week, which would be better for me.

You're very welcome to pop across town to see me during the day next week! I guess a lunchtime trip out to the country roads north of London might be reasonably traffic free. Having said that, I'm currently looking at the world through a hotel window overlooking a 22 degree sunny Miami South Beach, so my expectations of nice weather are completely unrealistic!

Bruce,

Thanks for a great day out. Managed to nearly double the mileage from 250 to 440. Hope I didn't drive too much like an old woman.

Thanks again,

John

A pleasure meeting you, John. Just 550 more miles to go then... It must be really frustrating limiting the revs when you know there's so much more just beyond that green light on the steering wheel! Maybe a visit to relatives up North is called for! Or even a trip to the factory to say hello, have a cup of tea and then home again.

Does one really need to run in a modern engine? I guess so, if that's what Tom recommends, but really? In this day and age? I don't think I've seen a 'Running In. Please Pass' sticker in the back window of a car since Mott the Hoople were big.

John,

A Scottish invitation is extended to come and visit me. It would certainly get a few miles on and you could take the back roads and make a weekend of it. It would also give me an Atom "fix" as I've still over a month to wait until I get mine!

I ran my Civic Type-R gently for it's first 500 miles before getting it's first oil change.

Like you say though, these days, I don't think modern engines need anything more than this.

I did notice my Rover K-Series became much more smooth after it had done 500+ miles on my Atom 1 though.

I've just had a quick look at my Civic's manuals and I can't see any obvious information about running the engine in.

I'll have to remember to copy the engine service information before I sell it actually.

I think these days, all engines are run/tested before they are fitted to the cars. Although, as a caring owner of a new car, is 500 miles of considerate driving too much to expect.

Isn't running in more to do with 'all' the car and getting used to it rather than extending the engine life.

Yep, that's a good point - especially so with a car like the Atom. If anything's going to break due to a manufacturing fault, it's probably going to break early on.

Better to have it happen when you're treating the car with some care than when you're 'doing a Meyrick' around the 'ring

Are you going to bring him down to Bedford on the Saturday, John? Maybe he could help with the oil change because you'll definitely need one by then (if not before...)

I have to say that I am impressed... Although, having seen your weather resistant outfit/s I think you'll be OK. The only thing you might consider is heated gloves...

I would advise A roads as motorways long distance can be very tedious in an Atom.

I am hoping to get the required miles in for an oil change locally. (If not does anyone know a friendly Honda dealer half way up the A1!!)

Alastair if you are going on the 5th March to Bedford you are more than welcome to come down with me. I am staying at an hotel called the Woodlands Manor phone number 01234363281 if you want to book a room for the night of the 4th March.

Where do i plug heated gloves into or do they run of batteries?

If you have a power socket (for your intercom, perhaps?) you can use that, otherwise you can wire straight into the battery terminals (with a fused connection, naturally, as you don't want to blow things up!) It's not difficult at all.

Battery powered heated gloves are available from around £24, but certainly won't last all the way to Scotland, and probably aren't really up to the job. However, battery powered heated glove liners might be worthwhile at £69. See: www.heated-motorcycle-clothing.co.uk/gloveliners.html

Widder gloves (www.riderhouse.co.uk/widder_faq.htm to answer all your questions) are around £120 stand alone (i.e. if not part of a Widder heated vest etc. system) and really work - at least they did on my bike before I got heated grips. Hey, there's a thought - how about a factory option heated steering wheel? They've got them on Range Rovers, not to mention Bentley GT's!

Whatever, make sure that the gloves you get have elements all over the back and the thumb and fingers and not just pads on the back.

Due to the weather the visit to Scottsman has been abandond. (I was due to start tomorrow and end up back in a hotel on Friday night near Bedford.)

Oh well, just have to wizz round the M25 a couple of times over the next day or so to get the miles up.

Thanks for the invite Scottsman.

I'm up at Warwick which isn't that far off the M25 should you fancy visiting a very "weathered" little Atom any time before Bedford!

Just to say its currently snowing and hailing here in Warwick, which is perfect Atom weather as far as I'm concerned ...so I'm off for another play :-)

Oh, and there's a garage (not a Honda dealarship though) just round the corner from me that have done at least one oil change on an Atom so far...

I know it's a rude question, but are you married? I am under threat of having the "key" confiscated and my wife does not feel it appropriate that I should be led astray when the weather is like this by offers of oil changes in Warwick!!

The weather has caused one or two of these at home.

Look forward to seeing you on the 5th at Bedford?

Are you well insured, John?

I have to say that I take my hat off to the Ferribys and Smiths (and the spirit of the occasional Lloyd) of this world for shrugging the weather off so nonchalantly! Personally, I gaze out at the snow and think, cocoa, fire, telly. Or at worst, Volvo... But then, I'm a wimp!

No, not married ...they couldn't get the car up the aisle at the church.

Its now glorious sunshine here in Warwick at the moment ...dry roads ...not tempting at all...

Volvo....Hummmmm Such a good idea I've just been out and bought myself a second hand C70. I'm still in trouble with the wife something along the lines of "isn't one open top car enough"!

Sorry atom120 cannot make Warwick are you at Bedford on Saturday?

Another design classic from Ian Callum - he of DB7 fame whose new AM Vantage is just coming

His Jaguar designs should be hitting the streets in a couple of years!

The lines on the C70 are lovely. Has IC ever penned a duffer?
