300bhp supercharged in this week's Autocar
Discussion
Despite Simon's best efforts to convince us otherwise, ours is getting one bolted on this winter. I think its safe to say we don't need driving lessons and we want to go faster. 130mph up the hill from Bergwerk to the Karussel is 20-30mph down on a 911RS and just won't do.
Probably going to fit Alcons on the rear as well. Changing the bias has helped, but its still not quite good enough.
Also big lights and a roll bar (although not quite as extreme as Jon's), so its FIA compliant.
Should be good. Anyone got a blown 220 yet?
Anyone heard anything more about the new floor and seats?

Hi all,
Been chatting to Tom about the Supercharger on the standard 220's.
It would be about £4,500 (+vat) for the kit to take it to 275bhp with the current engine management and about £5,500 (+vat) if you wanted to go for the Hondata/Honda management and 300bhp.
The new body and seats are as follows, Ariel have re developed the "cockpit" floorpan with a nearly flat underbelly for better airflow, not exactly a full length bellypan but a much better shape. This also allows for a new set of seats that are about 20-30mm lower in the car (lower centre of gravity etc....)
Not sure if it's availble right now or very soon.
Anyone coming to Donnington??????

New floorpan sounds goods - anything that reduces the drag at higher speeds is a good thing.
The power upgrade sounds like a pretty reasonable option for existing 220 owners - I'd want to get some more feedback from existing Atom 300 customers before going for the upgrade to see how reliable it is in the long term and what it's like to live with.
657bhp/tonne though - that really is insane...
I don't think I'll be able to pop down Donnington Julian - I'm stuck in DIY hell at the moment, have a good time though.
Cheers, Ross.

New seats and flooring : is there any pics some where ?
Super charged upgrade : just want to say that i don't recommand the first level with MBE management which is to "simple", it does not take enougth parameters for a good supercharged installation and i consider that it doesn't take enougth even for the 220 Atom (no consideration of the air depression so always to "rich" carburation).

But you do get flames out of the back on downshifts. A mate caught it on video at Spa on the last session of the day, coming into the bus stop. Good couple of feet.
We are going to have both done, so I will let you all know. 300bhp, of course. Would love to see pics if anyone has any, though. MC

Import duty $600; you need a new ECU, not just a reflash, which is about $1,000, then you have to take the engine out; change all the gubbins over; and then put it all back in again, say 12 hours labour, which is another $1,000 to $1,500, taking it to about $6-6,500. I don't know if the Jackson kit includes all the new injectors and so on? Then the rest is profit, which is just fine with me, since Ariel's back up and support if things go wrong is fantastic, and I want Ariel to make money, since they will carry on making absurd cars like the Atom for me.
You can always fit it yourself if you feel brave :confused

I'm curious - why is the upgrade to the Supercharged Atom so expensive - the Jackson kit is $2600 dollars plus the Hondata reflash $600 - say $3500 including shipping - so what is the the remaining £3000 being used for?
regards
Ron
This is a good point. A company in Kent, CPL Racing, only charges £3,400. See:

Might be worth checking out...
Oh, and I forgot that you need a new loom too. The CPL one doesn't include a new ECU either: doesn't seem to do much either, since they are claiming 212 bhp and they are 220 bhp standard, but maybe its being stuck on a different engine.
I asked Simon about CPL, who said "On the Atom we do not use the Jackson Honda kit as the supercharger will not fit and we do not use the Jackson racing drive belt system as it is rather Meccano like and apparently prone to wearing and snapping belts. We tend to try and retain as many Honda parts as possible, but obviously we do have an advantage in not having air con and power steering. Unlike the Civic we do also have to remove the engine for fitting and there are additional parts such as electric water pump, different injectors and different wiring harness that are fitted, plus a different map and a programmable, rather than chipped, Honda ECU. It is therefore quite a long and comprehensive job"
I'll stick with the factory methinks. I know it will work and that if I manage to break it I have them on my side! Key question is can it produe more than 300 bhp reliably?
