OK I have been after a 2nd car for some time and have always wanted an Atom. Wife has agreed that if it's what I want then "crack on and stop whining". Currently have an A4 estate TDi so that's the load luggging/long haul sorted, Q is:

I need to commute 40 miles each way about 3 times a week, mostly motorway and A road, I can lift share with the wife is the weather is really bad, but would the Atom be OK for the rest of the time or would I soon become bored with the wind buffeting and lack of stereo (I think not)? Other choices would be Westy but just not so keen or other kit but again nothing that really floats my boat.

And finally, who's selling?

Motorways are not the Atom's natural habitat, so you might want to find a more interesting route for those nice days! Commuting implies that you'd be leaving the Atom whilst you work - is the place you'd leave it secure? And what if the weather changed during the day?

I'd say go for a drive with one of us at lunchtime at Rockingham and see how you like it on public roads...

As for selling, I am still thinking of upgrading however, you might want a Mk2 - either 160, 220 or new 300 bhp ... still, none of them will beat my Mk1 on corners

Unfortunately "want" and "afford" are two seperate issues, Mk1 is within reach, Mk2 is divorce! Been out with Simon a couple of years back so know roughly what I am in for and I have to pass the wifes work on my way in so I can lift share with no real issues. Parking is safe but outside at work but may be able to find a sheltered spot.

I just want one so badly.......

I think you'll get very bored of commuting in the Atom very quickly.

Surprisingly, the Atom is remarkably good on the motorway, but only providing you wear earplugs - you'll soon end up deaf otherwise.

Spend a few hundred quid on a fiesta or something and keep the Atom for those days when it's nice and sunny.

Lift sharing with the wife sounds like a recipe for disaster to be honest.

Cheers, Ross.

PS. borrowing money's so cheap at the moment, you really should think about finding the money to get an absolutely basic Atom 2 160 and then upgrade bits as and when you're ready.

Just did a quick tally up from the last price list I had and you'd be looking at about £20,500 (inclusive of VAT) for a bog basic 160 which will still be a hell of a lot of fun.

Right now I can't see you finding a Mark 1 for much less than £15k second hand. And if and when you come to sell it, you'll lose less on the Mark 2.

Cheers, Ross.

Quite a useful independent site here for money stuff:-

www.moneysavingexpert.com/

You should be able to arrange a loan very quickly over the Internet these days (as in a few days).
