Hi all,

I am new to this part of PH so please be nice smile

I fear I may have caught this 'Viper bug'. This concerns me. My day job revolves around cars, I am lucky enough to be involved with all the big names in sports/super cars, particurally the Italian ones, yet I think I am going to buy a Viper... I think I have gone mad!!!

It all started last week, I had to deliver a Ferrari to a good client of mine, who happens to have a varied collection of cars, I had never been to his garage before and had only seen the Lambos/Ferraris ect. Anyway, when I arrive he has this red Viper SRT-10 parked where he wanted the Ferrari, I offered to move it and he told me to take it for a drive, his words "a real drive", so off I went.

Now this chap lives in Surrey, just outside Windlesham to be exact, and there are some really, really, really nice roads there, roads that I feel comfortable with as it is just around the corner from an old employer of mine. So I went for it! What can I say..??!! To this day I still cannot get the excitement out of me. The car has none of the finesse of a Ferrari, a totally different flavour to a Lamborghini, and quite frankly, really does have some fundamental flaws, but all of that aside, I'm in love and I don't know why! To make matters worse, I saw the megafactories episode featuring the Viper assembly plant yesterday, now all I can say is I NEED one!

So, a few questions. Please forgive me as I am sure they have been asked before, but I have done a search and not found a comprehensive answer.

1. Aside from the initial purchase price, what taxes do I have to pay if I were to import one from the states?
Is it 10% import duty and 20%VAT? Is the value based on what is paid for the car, or a general market reviewed rate?

2. Aside from shipping, is there any further taxes that need to be paid stateside? Indeed is there any tax that can be claimed back from US?

3. From what I understand the IVA rules have been changed and this benefits Vipers? Is this true? What changes/modifications are required?

4. Once the car is registered and road going, how is the parts avalibility for these cars? I'm not looking at smacking it so service parts are the main concern, but should the worst happen, what do we do for body parts here in UK?

5. I would like an 2010ish SRT-10, what should I look for as far as common problems?

6. Would it just make more economical sense to buy one here?

7. I would hope to keep it for atleast a few years, I'm not in this to hope to make money, but I don't want a white elephant. How is the resale market presently?

Many thanks in advance.

1. Yes its 10% import duty and 20%VAT, Yes the value based on what is paid for the car, also allow for shipping and insurance, transport to the docks which can be quite expensive in you buy inland

2. No further taxes that need to be paid stateside. No tax that can be claimed back from US

3. IVA rules havent really effected the viper, the main items are the rear fog lights and side indicators they have to be installed, allow £200-£300

4. just about all parts come from the US, even if you buy from Chrylser we have great contacts in the US that fly items over regularly

5. No real problems except finding one, there arent many available in the US

6. You wont find a 2010 for sale over here, the huge majority of the SRT's are around 2005

7. resale is very strong on the older vipers though they have already lost a big chunk form the initial buying price

Its all compounded as well so take the sale price, add in the shipping, add 10% duty on that then add 20% VAT on the new total. you now have to price it will cost you to get it out of the docks. It will then be about £600 to get it on the road with the IVA and registration if you do it all yourself. Insurance will most likely want a tracker on a 2010 also so add another £900. Its can also be expensive to ground ship it in the US so if its a long way from the docks you need to think about that, even a short trip can be $300 or more.

That's not necessarily true if buying new (2010) and if you can find a dealer to sell new. Some i spoke to would sell new but I had to pay the state tax (circa 6-10%) others wouldn't even talk to me and Bernie was happy to sell new and as an export so no tax.

Good luck in your search smile All the above info is correct, I know of a place in FL that has a 2011 ACR in a metallic green which is Pornographic, and a snip at $109,000 smile

Hi to all,

Firstly, many thanks for clarifying the situation for me.

I have been looking, and as my requirements are rather broad I am spoiled for choice. A nice development is that the owner of the car mentioned in my first post has very kindly agreed to do a car swap with me for 4-6 weeks, the only issue is I have to buy a suitable car for the swap. Have been toying with the idea of a Porsche GT3 so will probably get one of those for now, and once I have been in the Viper for a while, hopefully that will solidify the purchase of one.

Will report of any developments as they happen.

Many thanks once again.

sorry this makes no sense, your buying a GT3 so you can swap it for a few weeks with someone who has a SRT10, why dont you just buy a SRT10.

Hi,

I know I like the GT3, I know I could live with one long term, the Viper I am not so sure about, hence the swap.
