So this morning when I was driving to work, after a couple minutes on the road, bing! The light comes on (and stays on). Temperature and oil pressure guages looked OK, only things I noticed were a change in the exhaust note (didn't sound as burbley/bassy) and at idle the engine was revving higher - around 1500rpm. I haven't owned the car that long or driven it that much (too much snow) so I can't really say whether it feels much out of the ordinary, apart from those things.

Anybody got any suggestions? Should I try and pick up a code reader from somewhere?

check your fuel filler cap. Make sure its tight.. But a code reader would be handy at least you would know what area to look...

Filler cap seems OK. Is there a particularly decent diagnostic tool to go for? Am I going to have to order from the USA, or do the 'EOBD' tools I see in this country work with the Viper's OBD II system?

Car is a 2001 RT/10, if it helps.

a generic code reader works fine

1500 rpm idling is def not right

Could be a small vacuum leak, got the same problems a few times before.

It was worse in the past, but problem went away when I changed my plugs with new ones.

Thanks for suggestions, ordered a code reader today and should get it by Thursday so I'll see what's up then hopefully. On the drive home from work tonight the MIL was still illuminated, but the idle and exhaust note were OK at the beginning of the journey - went weird again after about 10 minutes driving. I'll be leaving it at home until I get a code to point me in the direction of the problem and then see about a solution smile

sounds like you see the problem once the engine is warmed up
pcm goes from open to closed mode (or vice versa) when cold/warm
perhaps 02 related (lambda sensor)?

you may be able to read the trouble code using the following procedure, someone did clam that it doesn't work on later cars but it works on my 97 and 2009, just on the 09 it puts the code in the display rather than flashing the mil. have a go you have nothing to lose.

Cycle the ignition as follows within 5 seconds (nb on is just before start)

on - off - on - off - on

now count the number of times the MIL flashes, there will be a pause between each number of the code, and a longer pause between each trouble code.

once you have your trouble codes you can post them back on here or use google as up to a certain range odbII codes are standard.

Thanks for the tip Dave, fortunately the code reader has just arrived at the office so I should be able to check it out with that when I get home this evening and report back! smile

It will be a lot easier with a reader, one blink or take too long switching hands and you miss a light, you are then dismantling the exhaust when you should have been looking at the ignition. With a reader it will just tell you the code and the reader should be able to clear the code also, so worth having.

OK so I got home and hooked up the scanner, pulled the following two codes:

P0159 $D1 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 2 Sensor 2
P0138 $D1 O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2

I suppose it could have been worse!

I think they're high flow. If that would cause this issue though, wouldn't it have presented itself sooner?
