Fast drivers, check you dampers!
Discussion
Like many things, been meaning to post an alert up for a while now about the OE crank dampers...wasn't till a few weeks ago at a hillclimb event and witnessed a lovely Healey's damper let go (made a right mess, trashing all the front of the car) that it reminded me I should put a post up. I've known several start to go bad and luckily caught them in time. So what do you look for? ...just 'eyeball' the damper side-on with the engine running, give it some revs tweaking the throttle linkage and look for the damper running out of true / round. Its basically fatigue of the rubber-ring part that's sandwiched between the 2 steel parts. The rubber can deteriorate with age and heat, but typically its the ones with BHP upgrades and that are really driven (ie competitively or on track) that will start to give. They are an inexpensive part to up grade given the damage one could do if lets go, you will need to torque to 250ftlbs on the bolt, there's not room for a nice big torque wrench in there (although I have use of one) I just measure out length of a bar and weight to get correct torque.
