I got the car back today after having the cats removed. What a difference! I can only assume that the damaged cat was hindering exhaust flow as the car seems far more responsive now. Also, absolutely no fuel smell in the cabin now, temp gauge noticeable lower and in-car temp lower. A more gutteral sound from the exhaust and a bit louder but not had it on full chat yet! Also, no popping (or much less) on changing down through gears. All-in-all, only positive changes and wish I'd done it ages ago!

And rather importantly, what are the exhaust readings like ? I'm not an evironmentalist - just thinking of your next MOT.

Car was manufactured in 1995 so the emissions criteria are quite liberal. And got some baffles for the exhaust for dB!

I got a local mechanic to do it. By the time I saw the car the side sills were back on again I'm afraid. But it's just straight through 3" pipe apparently.

Just wondering exactly where the cuts were and what type of pipe and clamps? Stainless, 3"?

As far as I can tell, no cuts were required as AM cats fitted over exhaust tubing. Yes, 3" stainless pipe.

It'll depend on what you have in the car at the moment Mark, if you still have stock cats I would suggest cutting as close to them as possible in order to give yourself plenty of room for adjustment at a later date should you chose to add in some aftermarket cats at some point (they seem to vary in length so the less you've previously cut out the better)... The stock exhaust is less than 3" but an exhaust fabricator will be able to knock up the right size pipe and stretch it for slot fitment etc, and should also be able to step it up/down to fit between sections of pipe which change in diameter.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking smile
Here's what Ive got at the moment, Stock Headers (2000), Stock cats (2 1/2 tube in and out of cat) then 3" Cat back Bellanger system thumbup
Current noise 119db

So If I get rid of the cats its going to be a little bit louder biggrin
Also you will notice the second silencer is removed with the Bellanger system wink

With high flow cats, mine was 131dB on a dyno run last year!
