FUEL CAP CHROMING
Discussion
ive took my fuel cap apart today to get chromed seein as it was lookin a bit mingin, just hope the plastic pins go back ok when it comes to putting it back together, has anyone done this already, did you change the pins?,might put new pins in as the one side had to be drilled out to push them out,
seemed a better idea than forking out $395 for a new one

This is somethin I wanna do too one day, when I get a spare few minutes.
And me, but the 97's have the metal roller which damages the chrome and I think the pins are metal which I read on the VCA site causes some other issues? I think the chromed original looks better than the MGW ones tbh. I also noted the other day that some of the london buses look like they have chromed caps!Well had mine chromed, you did well to get the pins out on the plastic one I broke one of the lugs tring to get mine out but I had a 97 one with the brass pins which was easy.
I did have the neck powder coated as well in black which looks great but you can't get the rubber sealer washer seperate so just assembled it with a piece of an old inner tube.
Must admit it does look fab.

You and I talked briefly about this job at Luton Lunch last year and I remember you mentioning a neat-trick to help separate the neck/boss from the fuel hose - something involving a coat-hanger.....
What was that about again?

GTSDave's is chrome plated,
where's the pic Dave !
I'll try and get a pic up later... where's the pic Dave !
Not sure if Rob had it Chrome plated, or bought one already done... Without going through the boxes of parts with a view of potentially finding the old one I can't be certain about that unfortunately.
The coat hanger is to get it back on again, you use a bit of one to hook into the filler neck to pull it through the gas cap rubber seal. the most important thing though is to smear some washing up liquid (not much) on the rubber first to lubricate it or you will be there all day trying to got it on.

If you use a coat hanger, which is not really stiff enought, welding wire is better ALWAYS make a big T at the top, it needs a lot of force to pull the filler back up and if you slip with the hanger and no T then you have a coat hanger stuck down in the tank somewhere.
To dismantle the brass pin one I just made up a couple of bushes the right size to push the pins out, I never could get the knack for the plastic items, it was always the part in the catch that troubled me.
