cool we know red victor from santapod, here's a member here on PH as well
make sure you use the green coloured coolant, there a long list of fluids and a few service parts if you want to do it right and go the whole hog and swap everything, not a bad idea starting a-fresh.
a few fluids mentioned here

but some parts will have to come from the states, if your around sunday i could pop over

fed up fed up fed up looks like its more than the valve gaskets, this aint a good start to my "american dream machine"
Sorry to hear that Paul, have they given you any indication of what they think it might be? My money is still on either the timing chain cover or the sump gasket and/or bolts... which are a pretty well known issue, and usually pretty easily solveable. It'll all work out in the end mate!

Don't worry Paul.Like i said you need to start somewhere and the valve covers are the place to start. When your gaskets arrive the job can be finished and then you can drive your dream machine. In fairness although they look great they're not so "dreamy" when they go wrong.
I think i mentioned this to you.
Remember you've imported a car with no real mantainence history so there'll be niggling problems to start with until you have your own service record.
yea, oil a side you can change just about every fluid for about £200, plugs, leads, fuel filter are fairly cheap, also check the belt at the front of engine bay for signs of cracking on the edge of the belt itself, if its got cracks that will need swapping
while on the ramps it essiential to re-grease all the ball joints

If you're needing gaskets for a water leak as well...sounds like timing chain case cover. This was one of the most common casues of oil leak on the '97s along with rear main seal (which presents itself as oil dripping from behind the flywheel-inspection plate). If you need to know correct torque for the crank bolt etc and not got a workshop manual, I'll photocopy the pages for you.
