Take a look at the section on the main UK Viper Club website about importing your vehicle from the US - gives lots of useful information.

Container Costs = $900 from the West Coast
Suggest that you buy from a VCA member. Look at the American Web site for a good car.
If the car does NOT have a standard exhaust (Corsa / Borla) make sure that you can "borrow" one to get it through the SVA. SVA legal limit = 103Db after market pumps out 104Db.
El Presidenti (Viper Paul) helped me out.
Fit side repeaters, re-focus the lights and you are away.

Forgive me for trying to be mean, is there no way of lowering the taxes, for instance if an American was to bring their car in to England for a holiday, I wouldn't expect them to have to pay tax. I presume it's when you go to register it ?
Also I notice the Japanese imports seem to go in to Ireland first, does anyone know the reason why ?

You have to pay the shipper all the taxes before the car is released to you in the UK.
The only way you can get around it is claim the car as a "Personnel Import". That means proving you lived abroad and owned the car for more than one year before you bring it to the UK. Then there is no duty to pay.
