It was called the "RedHead", sadly it had a massive engine failure at over 250mph back in 64 Speed Week, the fire burn,t through the front bulkhead, burn,t through the drivers oxygen supply tube (as you can guess..fire and oxygen don,t mix to well!) the car came to a halt on it own after a few miles but the driver had no chance (the guy in the film with the hat who helped Burt ) they found just chared bones. Later the car was rebuilt and is still used to this day.
BTW I bidded on the Green Monster on Ebay!! at least I can tell my kids I tried to buy a LSR car.(Would have looked good on the drive and as a leaf blower.....bring it on! I,m un banned as you may have notice.

The Blue car in the pic is Micky Thompson`s CHALLENGER1 it did 406mph but blew it engine on the return run (Or should I say blew one of its 4 engines) That was back in the 60,s
The Red Jet Car at the back of shot is the first jet Land Speed Record car ever built and run on the salt, it made a best run of 368mph but had design issues and also the exposed wheel slowed it down to much. Its final run ended then its front wheel spindle snapped at over 350mph. It was never run in anger after that. Also the Grenn Monster that was for sale is only a similar replica of the real car the crashed at over 600mph, nothing much was left of it but the driver Art Arfons walked away with only salt in his eyes and a few bruises, he discharged himself from hostiptal later the same day! Not sad after the fastest crash on land! The ebay car holds no Land Speed Records and the speed records listed on the side of the car mean nothing, in fact the Original Green Monster was a fair bit different to this rebuilt machine (Sorry for going on but I have been "into" LSR,WSP and ASR stuff for over 20 years ,(Neil and Joel can testify to that!..got some more films for Joelhehe and if anything gets me going its LSR!)My boys room has a sizeable collection of stuff on the subject cloud9

With all due respect, Venom, and not at all trying to stir things up 'round here, but you might want to re-check you facts on this car. I grew up with this car (the Redhead), and several other LSR cars before it. My father is the Whipp in Hammon-McGrath-Whipp, and he was the actual owner of the car (while Bod & Don were partners, they never contributed any $$ toward ownership). The list of accomplishments for the Redhead are, indeed, numerous ... but no one has ever died in it! They may have severely soiled their trousers, but no one has ever met their demise while driving it or as a result of driving it.

The original engine was a blown 392 c.i. Chrysler Hemi that pushed the car to speeds of around 350 mph ... while it held numerous records of over 300 mph (including Hot Rod Magazine's Worlds Fastest Hot Rod, in 1966, at something like 335), Bob could never back up the 350 runs for a record, there. The car was sold after the 1971 meet, and the new owner installed a small-block Chevy, and went well over 200 mph on several occasions. After a few years, Jim Lattin & Elmo Gillette bought the car and started running flathead Ford V8s ... also pushing the car over 200 mph! In fact, the Redhead has put more drivers in the 200 MPH club than almost any other LSR car. Jim Lattin retired the car after the 1991 racing season, and it now resides in his private museum in Southern California. The folks who filmed "Worlds Fastest Indian" persuaded him to bring it out for the movie, so he cobbled up another flathead just so it could move under its own power ... even though it "sounds" like a healthy hemi in the movie, I don't think the car ever reached 150 mph during the filming.

The Redhead does, indeed, have a rich history on the Salt Flats and on the dry lakes ... but there's just so much mis-information about it! In the effort to present a factual account of the car, my father (he's 87, now, and the sole survivor of the original team) has been working on a DVD documentary. But, since we're currently building another LSR car, he hasn't been able to give it much time, lately. If you are interested, keep an eye on the LSR Forums and the Bonneville Racing News ... when the video is done, we'll be making announcements there.

One last thing ... the names of the crew, and even the characters themselves, surrounding the Redhead in the movie were/are purely ficticious movieland creations. While our team may have been aware of Burt (not only in 1962, but in subsequent years as well), little if any contact was made between them ... our team was simply too busy for that kind of socializing!

Hopefully, this clears up a bit of the mis-information that has been created and allowed to persist for so long. Thanks for the opportunity to share some of my direct experience with the Redhead! In the meantime ...

CHEERS!
