Silverstone fun in the wet
Discussion
Did a track day Tues at Silverstone, it rained most of the day, they had to close the track for a while, too much standing water! Hope it stays dry for the Brit GT race there today, so Neil and Colin and Kathy don't get wet! You get a little damp in a Comp Coupe with no windows, but as long as you keep the speed up, its not too bad! Car performs well it the wet, and was fun, and turned in some good laps. Brookspeed already have the championship in the bag, but hope the Vipers do well there today, the circuit suits them.
The sun came out for a bit!

had some sun at Silverstone for a change! racing was good, x2 hour race with driver swap over, fuel and left side tyre(s) at half distance. Brookspeed (started last place on the grid)and the silver KJ compe coupe were 1,2 for several laps but they came together, so an emergency stop for Brookspeed put them nearly a lap down though they were flying catching up until they had an engine failure... RPM finished 4th K&J second with x2 ferrari's 1st and 3rd
a depleted field at the end think only x6 GT cars finished the race
Brookspeed is selling their CC, to replace it with a new car
there's was some lovely classics there to for a heritage race

Hi Nad
I've done a few track days this year and will be going to Silverstone with goldtrack in September. I'm curious to know, which tyres do you use in the wet? I was on my Toyo 888s last weekend at Bedford which were superb in the morning when it was dry. Unfortunately had a huge spin when it started raining in the afternoon and drove like a pussy for the rest of the day. Presumably I'm better running on my michelin road tyres in the wet?

They were Pirelli P-Zero (track compound) tyres.
I raced on the Toyo 888's at Knockhill in the rain, yes you have to be carefull on them, they are better than Kumho's in the wet though that I run on my GTS 17" rims. Droping the pressures helps in the wet, try 24psi or a little lower. In the dry aim for 33psi hot on the Toyos I've found to be good. Yes the Michelin Pilot Sports (not the earlier MXX) are good in the wet, I don't rate them much in the dry though. You'll get millage out of them as they are such a hard compound!
Hope to see you on a track day soon.

No need to short shift. We had the CC silenced to comply with UK circuit's draconian noise restrictions. Janspeed developed an exhaust for this car that brings it down to 105 db without losing power. The car did sound awesome on open pipes, but with the idle at 108-110 db, there was not much chance of using the car in this country.
Nice to see some interest in track days etc, anyone fancy doing one at Spa and/or Magny-Cours in October?

True some interest is nice, we only have 14 cars going to Germany for track events which will be great fun.
Its just a lot of us don't have a trailer, choice of tyres and unlimited funds to wreck what for most of us is a dream car, but we try our best, like our 93 laps at Brunters between three cars.

good fun and learning session on a 'ridedrive' course today, including 7hrs on the road learning some of the Official Trafpol driving techniques from an ex class 1 Trafpol Officer and an hour on part of Kemble airfield's spare runway searching out the limits. useful time on large empty tarmac space - damn an RT on R888s sticks on the road at 70mph round tight bends!! (no silverstone wall to possibly hit in this situation!) + looking certain now that i'll gain a 25% discount on my A.Flux insurance, having given the instructor very little to comment on (by his own admission) on the return journey

Cool Paul, you'd have had 16 if it wasn't for VOI USA which is going to be lots of fun too!!!
You don't need a trailer and tyre choice for track days, more importantly I'd advise brake pad choice and cooling to fronts, more important (as I think you once found out) that is where we can help by our experienses, good and bad, to advise and support others new to it, etc. When I first did my track day over 10 years ago, I had many questions (luckily Justin was able to anwser them). I've had many pms through here about such, some don't like to be all public about first times...fine by me, just happy to help! Yes, track days are pricey, it's not just the booking but tyres / brakes wear, fuel costs, I know all too well on my limited funds. Not sure where you're coming from with wreking cars though, I'm lucky enough to have never had a prang on a track day (just racing, and idiots on the road) unless of course you get over-excited on track or drive in an idiot manner, then cars will get wrecked regardless. Please don't scare monger people from track days, and exploring their cars potential, A GTS is simply trying to encouage more along, all these big brakes etc, many are better equipped 'perhaps'...I'm still on stock 17" wheels and OE front brake calipers (because I can't afford and justify the upgrade) but, I spend wisely on the pads etc! Performance Friction, wink-wink!
I sent out a mail that I'd double booked for Brunters, was at a track else where, was looking forwards to the Asda day. Concerned for gearboxes there, if you got up to speed in GENI/II there, ragging around the track, no cool off lap, only to sit in pick up/drop off zone is asking for problems. 5th and 6th is very weak, and dexIII breaks down under such conditions!

Hi Phil, silencing the SC cars is more of a challenge, becuause of the gasses being a little hotter and more volume they quickly burn out most packing materials in silencers. SC's don't like being too restricted either. Best way is to get a silencer you can re-pack, one end unbolts. A fiberglass type packing is the best noise absorber, but can't cope with the heat so well (ie burns out faster) a wire-wool type will last longer. You want the biggest outer diameter and length silencer you can fit, eg full length of the sill + 3' and 5" OD (6" is a bit too tight in the sill). Hope this helps. I've also used the "supertrapp" discs that bolt on the ends to drop an extra few db for some events too, we can get down to below 108 then!

Try Alumina wool its good for 1200 deg C I use it on furnaces if you want some to try let me know Gassing Station | Vipers | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
