service engine soon
Discussion
This morning while out driving I had the service engine soon light come on.I have just changed the oil plugs and leads.Car now has 31K on the clock, what brings the light on eg Knock sensors Oxygen sensors or is there a reset I have to do on the service or do you think it will have to go to chysler.Do I need to stop driving the car.
Yours is a 1997 yeah, in which case you can call up the trouble-code that set the light. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position (not start) then back to off position, do this 3 times within a few seconds, on the third turn to on, leave it in the on possition. The check engine lamp will then start to flash on and off in sequence. Count the number of flashes, there will be pauses between numbers of flashes, you will get 2-digit number codes flashed at you. The last code you'll count should be 55. When you have the codes I can tell you from the list what's set the service engine light. Phone me or email if you want. The check engine will light and stay on for anything emission related, you can still drive them sometimes (does it sound / run OK?) but best to find out the problem. I have the means / software to delete the check engine codes to save a trip to Chrysler. I can't remember if disconnecting the computer / battery (pulling the positive terminal by ECU will do) for 10 mins clears the codes, I think it does also.
If you've got a missfire, don't run it if you've still got cats, unburned fuel into the hot cats = bad trouble.
Drivers side cyl bank reads from front of engine to back 1,3,5,7,9, pass. sides reads from the front back 2,4,6,8,10.
(Remove windscreen lower cowl, if you cant fit you hand around there) Coil packs if reading from left/driver side across both packs to right side reads 1,7,3,5,9, upper, and lower 6,4,2,10,8.
Romoving plugs will indicate whats going on (if idling for a while cyl 9 & 10 often are a little sooty).
The 1998 and later year cars will not flash up the codes.

still having proplems took it to chrysler to read the codes 1) oxy-sensor on passenger side going to ground 2)also running rich. Got them to look at o2 sensors seem ok also got them to change plugs.Still runing bad but they seemed to think that passenger side cat was in a bad way causing the engine breathing proplems and also causing rich mixture. They thought this because white dust was coming out of the exhaust.I guess next job is to remove cats and replace oxy-sensors.(cats are 3" stainless steel from jonB only 6000miles on.Your comments or ideas please
Sorry somewhat confused here, if one sensor is shorted to ground and has not been changed then the engine will over fuel, they will always do this a a safety measure so you need to get the 02 sensors changed if they are duff.
The cats should be fine as they are free flow if 3".
I would change the 02 sensor and see what happens.
I did think that European cars had only one sensor, which is piss easy to change wip the sills off, about 5 minutes and they can see them.
Good luck

The lastest news is that the 02 sensors seem ok and have been cleaned (no service light on )but the right hand side cat was blocked. This would also make the engine run rich on one side. The work shop next to mine is Tig welding a 3" piece of stainless steel in place of the cats ( had to buy 6m of it so plenty left over )so hopefully up and running tommorow.
