Hi All
Looking for my first viper after years of dreaming and was wondering if there were any milage issues , when looking to buy ?
i will be lookin to buy a gen 1/2 rt/10 in yellow ( not everyones cup of tea , but love the yellow ) and was looking for any points of view about wether a viper with 30 - 40k miles is worth a look , or should i stick with lookin for as low milage as possible , i think the viper engine , generally is pretty solid ? is that right ? but are there any issues i should be aware of ?
any help or opinions would be very welcomed
many thanks in advanced
Les

Personally I would always go for lowest possible mileage. Engines are very good and will last forever as they are understressed.

The problem is with Vipers is that they don'r wear too well. Interior and body parts will show useage before very many miles.

Hi Les,

If I can help from this side of the pond, don't hesitate to ask. cool
I can run VIN#'s on Chrysler's data base and if it's a USA Viper I can help you make sure it is a good one. I have helped many UK members with their imports.

With regard to the Yellow GenI, which is up for sale... Here's a bit of info...

If memory serves me correctly it has about 11k on the clock, so extremely low mileage. It was at a dealer in Manchester for a couple of years with blue Vinyl Stripes, I considered it as an option just before I found mine, they offered it to me for about £23k, which I think was about £7k below the price they were advertising, the car eventually sold to a second dealer and has been for sale with them since early last year at a lower price, around £22k if I remember rightly. They took the decision mid year to remove the stripes, the car has been for sale both on Pistonheads and Autotrader on and off for quite some time. It has been on ebay a couple of times too but at a higher price.

It has also been the subject of a couple of other threads throughout the last year... Here is a link to a previous thread (There are also a few pics on there which I posted up):

Link to more Yellow GenI Info

As Baz mentioned above the car has a Tan interior, which isn't to everyone's taste, (Neil definitely doesn't like it... tongue out ) but personally I think it looks Ok with the yellow exterior, (I have also seen in in a couple of black cars in the past and didn't think it looked too bad).

I was advised previously that the car is immaculate, and from what we saw at the Autosport Show I have to say that that comment probably isn't far wrong. The car didn't sell at the show, from what we were advised the bids got to £18k, but then stopped, presumably because of the sellers commission and tax that also needed to be added.

A previous poster on here did advise that he had been offered the car for £20k, which is an extremely good price, but bear in mind that it only has the standard wet weather gear with it and doesn't have a hard top or side screens, however this is unlikely to be a problem if the car is only to be used as an occasional driver and kept garaged.

If there is any other advice I can give please let me know.
Good luck with your search! thumbup

nearly all gen1's suffer with leaking head gaskets, its a well known issue regardless of mileage that isnt cheap to fix, around $1100 for the parts plus labour, the engines are pretty bullet proof in general, you wont read many threads starting 'my engine has just emploded'

Hi Guys
Thanks for all your advise , putting all the info ive gathered other the last week or so , i think i will go for a low milage gen2 rt/10 ( with hard top if poss ) in yellow , i think my chances of finding that car in the UK is pretty slim , so ill take the importing route from America

Thanks Viper Wizard for your offer of help from across the pond , i will take you up on that if you dont mind , what would be the best way to contact you ?

Thanks again for all your help

It's a real shame, the car appears to be immaculate... and even when offered to people at £20k they aren't biting... I have to say I don't understand it. Even with the difference of opinion regarding the interior I think it's a snap at that kind of price! I really would like to see that car go to a good home.

Only issues I saw with it - there are some lines on the nose section, where it looks like they cut the vinyl stripes it had on earlier (may polish out most of it - but not all). Small scrape on passenger side mirror, and it definitely needs new tyres.
Didn't see what condition the roof and side windows were in - but I would imagine they're pretty good given the low mileage.
Otherwise, aside from the tan interior (or, sorry, cognac) - it's a decent car.
