Gearbox/Axle Fluids
Discussion
Please could someone be kind enough to point me in the direction of the above, and the axle additive thingy. Is there anyone in the UK who can supply or is it an import job. I did get it through Chrysler a few years ago but they always seem a bit "dim" when you say the word VIPER! Any info would be welcomed, doing a DIY service at the mo to save a few ££££. Getting that f@#*ing oil filter off was a bastard job...tried the usual method with "tool" and it chewed through filter base, tried screw driver through filter without success, tried hammer and chisel ,that moved it just enough for another tried with the oil filter wrench, 3 hours later I ended up with it removed but looking like a piece of swiss cheese.....Oh and I managed to put muy head into a bowl full of old oil whilst grovelling around under car....give me a pinto OHV any day!
So.....Gearbox and Axle oil and additive..........Oh any idea on how to get the oil out of the axle please?

when TB was at Whitehouse for the recall i had them do the diff fluid, its a major job and expense to do it properly, so the fix is to suck what they can out with something similar to a turkey baster/bellows and tube
I got some bottles of 4 FL OZ slip additive from Chuck while in the US about $6 (Chuck cant post fluids) of course £25 from Chrysler

This is what i found for them all a while back.
Oil Mobil 1 10w30 8.5Qts (+)
Trans fluid Dexron III (SM) 4Qts
or Castrol Syntorque LT
(Mopar #4874459)
Diff fluid Mopar High Performance Synthetic 0.8L (45oz)
Axle Lube SAE 75 W/140 (MS-8985)
(Mopar #4874469)
Diff friction modifier Mopar Gear Additive 0.1L (4oz)
(Mopar #4318060AB)
Coolant Ethylene glycol with silicate 12.8Qts (12.1 L)
inhibitor Mopar 4267020
Clutch fluid DOT3 (4?)
Power steering fluid Mopar Power Steering Fluid 21 oz (650ml)
(Mopar #4883077);
Brake fluid DOT3 (4?) 250ml (res)
Should all be available from your Chrysler parts counter although they will probably have to order some of them in?
As for the diff fluid if you haven’t got the pumpkin drilled for a drain plug the oil filter will seem like a walk in the park. The only way to get that stuff out without a plug is to suck it out of the fill hole with either a hand pump or vacuum pump. As for getting the new stuff in that is almost as fun. Best way I have found is put the additive in first and then a short tube on the bottle and hold the bottle above the diff and squeeze it in, and if you didn’t like engine oil in your hair don’t get diff oil on you as that stuff stinks
When doing the trans fluid either have a big oil tray or put the one you have about a foot in front of the drain point. The oil will shoot out about a foot horizontal and completely miss the pan you put under the drain plug....That little mistake left quite a good oil patch on the block paving drive...There is a TSB for replacing the trans fluid from the dexron III to the syntorque. I changed mine out but will probably go back at the next change as the syntorque is £20 a bottle and you need 4-5 of them. IIRC the replacement is only for NGR which with a 110db exhaust you don’t notice anyway.
Good luck

Don't recall spending that much on the additive from Chrysler, I'll get Marianne to dig out the invoice and check in the morning. about the only fluid i felt ripped off with was the syntorqe tranny fluid but then i was expecting to be ripped off for that as its expensive. I think they even have the oil filters for £4 as they are the same as the jeep. Mind you i usually pick up a Mobil 1 filter when in the US for the same price.
I've found a bottle of additive Tom its your if you want it.
Clutch fluid is an easy job you may as well do that to, tip from Chuck suck out the old fluid (i use a big syringe) and replace with any DOT4 press the clutch up/down about 30 times and repeat fluid change change, this process removes most of the old fluid

Yes please Neil, I will try and get the other oils from Joel.
Thanks everyone for your input and info..........I think the axle oil is best left to a garage with a vacum pump!
Thanks again,Tom
You could always try the drain plug mod of drilling out the back of the bottom cover plate bolt hole. I have heard this mentioned on the VCA site a few times and the benefit being you have a ready made sump plug when you put the bolt back in. It is a sinch to do the diff oil with a drain point, I guess dodge didn't want to add the extra weight though.

Don't blame me if you end up with a leaky diff

You can always use a Mityvac bottle with a 12 volt compressor or using the Mityvac in the pump mode. I refilled an Esprit's transaxle using this approach. Took less time than holding a funnel above the fender and less messy than the squeeze approach.

usually I just drop the sump bung into whatever I'm catching oil with, putting your head in it is real commitment! Top marks
