Hi y'all!

As I'm over in the US for 8 - 10 months and as I can't realistically import my TVR, I'm seriously tempted by a Viper. I went to have a good look at one (www.expocarsusa.com/details.php?id=4707) and have started the ball rolling re. selling the tusc. etc.

So, anyone got any good advice on what I should look out for on the test drive?

On a slightly different note, are you thinking of taking the car back to the UK with you once you finish work in the US? That would affect the decision making process on what car to buy.

i agree with the above. Most viper fans prefer pre 2000 model cars
as they came with stronger forged internals and bigger lumpy 708 cam.
2000 model year had cast pistons, a less racey cam and not much else.
2001 models onwards had cast pistons but benefitted from abs etc.

Any viper is a fantastic car, just depends what you plan on doing with yours

ah you mean the Honda's

bias to gen 1 and gen 2 on here as its what most of us have

shoutPaul

Nothing wrong with them other than being short about 100 hp so those pesky z06 are faster, but you wouldn't want one of those in the US as they are like vectra's. I think its something like the entire gen1 gen2 production run was equivalent to 6 months of corvettes.....

Now if DC got off its butt and in 2008 gives us the ponies and puts the styling more aggressive like the comp coupe , back some race team with factory support and go whip ass at lemans we'd be back on top.

I'd still take a SRT coupe though just wouldn't want to get rid of the GTS at the mo.

Ps i assume you have found the VCA site far more info on gen 3 on there. IIRC there was a recall on some of the early ones but shouldn't be a problem getting it sorted in the US and will probably have been done by now anyway. when you find one get a carfax (hpi check) and apply common sense. You will probably also be able to find a viper owner local to the car willing to take a look at it for you if you post on the vca.

Now I'm all confused! The new ones have around 500+ HP so how have they less than the old ones? The engines also bigger (8.3ltr)!!! And you're right about corvettes, around Houston every third car is one.

Yep Gen III has more horses than Gen I/II but they are not at the top of the game in their market during their period of manufacture. Gen 1 and II were. (cue argument about who's in the game and what the game is) but they need at least another 100 ponies stand proud above the z06

don't read too much into my statements though. I would still have a gen 3 in a moment if cost, garage space etc etc was not an issue and everything is tongue in cheek anyway. The gen 3 is a great car and has better breaking, handling and more creature comforts than the previous but in viperdom creature comforts go against what is viper.

Everyone is often loyal to the gen car they have, with further splits, as above, with the gen II real cars and the gen II cream puffs, then there's baz with some kind of hybrid between all the generations, wouldn't be surprised to find out he is DC's secret research department developing the gen 4 by combining all the beast bits from the previous models.

Now lets talk about which colour is fastest, Clearly blue and white as that's why they are the most popular

Cant coment on the secret dealings with DC BUT......I have been to MK alot over the past month or so.....

Anyway Yellow is fastest why else would they call it RACE YELLOW......

Best of both worlds Gen2 01 or 02 so you get ABS then fit Gen3 brakes via Dave at www.davesbigbrakes.com/ Fantastic guy to deal with (more stuff coming)...
And change the pistons to forged No more creampuff!!!!!!
Then do light mods to get stock Gen3 BHP.....

Mine is a Gen2.5 for now.....

They had to come with some kind of a catchy name because RED is the fastest in the WORLD!

Yes the old Honda will never be as good as a Gen 1/2 mine only Dyno'd 537 and the brakes are better stock it handles better, you get side pipes, better seats, better radio, a cupholder...LOL and a much better interior.

IMHO if you could afford it I would by either an SRT10 which are good value at present. or a later car they did brighten up the interior with 18" polished wheels not 17'3 and unless you are going to do some serious mods such as high pressure supercharger the 'Cream Puff' is slightly better than the original but only because its a slightly later model.

Should you buy a car and bring it back just watch for noise and wings these will make it very difficult to get through an SVA wings you can unbolt but making a car quiet takes some doing.

Just my 10 cents
