Noticed on Saturday that on almost full lock, turning right, the near side front wheel is emitting a rubbing noise at each wheel revolution. Any idea what I should be looking out for when I take the wheel off?

Do you have the porsche brake air-deflectors (mod added to lower wishbones)? These can catch wheel weights bad on full lock, or brake ducting come a drift / crushing? If wheel bearing knackered you should notice other bad signs when braking; jack up play etc.

I took the wheel off after posting the message and had a good look round for any obvious signs and play in the bearing but could not detect anything - can't see anything catching at all. Slow turning on full lock causes a grinding sound at each revolution and when done *very slow* (like on the drive) it almost goes down to a series of clicks.

Not too concerned right now, but will be taking it to the 'ring in 9 days!

UPDATE: On the Tunnel Run last month, this noise was noticeably worse, particularly when warm, and right hand turn you could hear the rubbing.

The next day, when cold, could not hear it but after a short run (<10 miles) it started to make the noise.

When very warm it is noticeable that it feels embarrassing driving past people!

Any ideas?

Lateral thinking, have you checked the powersteering pulley or the water pump pulley.

Strain on the steering ie when its used, could feedback by the belt being under stress to another part of the engine we all know how they love PS pump pulleys

I haven't, but what should I look for? I can only get this noise when its warm and moving. Unless you fancy sitting under the bonnet while I drive?

Not while you drive but if you let a certain well know 'Driving Instructor' drive I might consider it.

It's definitely coming from the nearside wheel or in that close vicinity. I had my brothers race mechanic look at it last year but we couldn't find any signs of rubbing anywhere. It has got worse since then. Maybe the sound is carrying from the engine bay and deceiving us? I'll have a look next time it is warmed up fully.

The sound does only happen when moving though, not if stationary on full lock which I would expect the p/s pump to do. It is also definitely a rubbing sound.

Is there any play in the wheel. If the bearing wears and creates movement, eventually the disc will touch the caliper body, especially in corners

No, we checked that last summer, seemed fine. No obvious signs of rubbing marks

seems strange it only does it when the cars warmed up, maybe something is expanding under heat which then rubs on something else

I dont do technical !

I reackon its got to be a hub bearing as it warms up the grease become more fluid and either a ball is flattened or breaking up.

I did notice that at the 'Ring' you did get your brakes a trifle warm while and the bearings are sealed items.

Plus I wont mention the 'high speed' gravel collecting operation at 'SPA'

Think you need to get them warm then take the wheel off use a long screwdriver as an ear extension and listen to each bearing as you give em a spin.

You can always pop down if you want another set of ears to look at it.

BTW talked to Baz this afternoon and he thinks that the spares from the Silverstone car are still available in the UK, may be a good source of cheap spares.

Just six bolts and its 'come off in me and guv'

Give him a call and no doubt he can fix you up.

Its quite scary really as only four bolts hold on the front hub, no lock washers tabs or anything so if you are going to do it make sure your have some studlock handy.

Nutlock is Ok but if you track it I would use stud lock as the brakes do get very hot, give me a ring if you want the torque settings or a hand.
