does that mean we can now bring things in upto £1000 without having to pay import tax ? just the VAT to pay ?

"Personal Allowance" and HM Customs Duty are two totally separate things I am afraid......old Gordon is obviously planning to bring something back from his next holiday overseas.

Simple answer is this will not change in the short term. The current limit is a european one and any changes that Gordon would like to make will need to be given the OK by the EU before they come into force. Don't hold your breath
