I appreciate that this may be quite difficult to answer but what would the cost of a '96 RT-10 with 50k miles be in the UK, private party? I'm trying to assess the financial feasibility of taking one back from the US with me when I return at the end of the year.

Try and get one with much lower mileage, there's plenty around in the USA.

In general UK vipers tend to have low mileage which punters would look for

Hi Hamish,

I believe that I have said this before.

If you own a car for more than 6 months before you bring it back to the UK, you do NOT have to pay the 27.5% import tax. I suggest that you make up your mind up rather quickly or you will be giving good money to the UK Government!!!!!!!!!!!!

In addition, you are looking at the wrong car. You need to be looking for a RT/10 with Electric Side Windows, ABS and a Hardtop. There are several on the US Viper web site at a good price with known history.

All you will need to do, in adition to buying the car is pay $900 to ship it from Longbeach, CA. I can give you the name of an English man who sorted it all out for me when I brought mine in a few years ago, if you want.

To get ABS you will need to go 2001 or 2002..
For electric windows you will need to go 1997 onwards make sure recal work is done.

Can't afford to go for one with ABS, electric windows or lower miles. I'm getting a good price on this one ($33k with hard OR soft top). As long it's got a resale value of at least £25k it's financially justifiable for me.

I was looking at another '96 RT-10 yesterday. This was is SO much nicer than the one I looked at the w/e before. It's a bit more expensive but has 16k miles and has had more modifications (high flow cats, cat-back exhaust, headers, smoothe tubes, roller rockers, lightened fly-wheel, upgraded wiring) and a 2 year warranty. It's white with blue stripes. How much would the colour scheme of the car affect value in the UK?

It's got all the stock parts but how would the powers that be know stock headers from Belanger ones, whether the car's got roller rockers etc. Even the exhaust looks the same and the high flow cats are obviously in the side sill. But is it not the case that taking a car >10 years old into the UK means that you don't need to meet these criteria, just an MOT? But these are issues that I need to look into so thanks for the reply.

so iam led to belive its a sound issue and the stock stuf is far quieter than the after market kit ,and it happens to be 2005 that makes the car 9 years old so it will need a sva ticket

I still think it would an awful hassle for them to prove that your car had after market parts. And I never said I was defo taking the car back this year though. It might be next year...

Not a lot of hassle really, during the sva they put a sound meter behind your car, if it’s too loud you fail. You fail you can’t get a registration doc yada yada yada.

As far as some mods are concerned, nope they probably don’t care but most if not all sports exhausts on vipers will be too loud. If any of the other mods add to exhaust noise then they wont help. I expect if you have a front splitter or rear wing you will probably contravene pedestrian impact assessments etc.

Of course once you have to piece of paper that says you conform and you can get it through the MOT every year what you do afterwards is up to you. I.e. back on goes the exhaust splitter etc.

Search the other forums here, you can probably find links to the full SVA requirements, a lot of the ultima guys are always talking about it as it is a major hurdle for their builds. There are a whole raft of checks in SVA which these guys do every day all year so it’s not much hassle for them.

So it's mainly just noise they're looking at? The car I'm looking at is loud! But I don't think the headers and roller rockers add to that much; it's mainly the free-flow cats and exhaust. They wouldn't be too difficult to replace temporarily. But am I correct in thinking that if the car's >10 years old then these issues are obsolete?

If the car is ten years old from first title then you will not need an SVA..
But you will need an MOT not as strict as an SVA but they can fail it if there are no cats due to emissions.
You will also need a rear fog light on any age car along with side repeaters and clear front sidelights..
