Well turned up for work early and found a nice big empty car park and a set of old mmx3’s that I want to finish off before fitting my new pilots. Cue lots of smoke and a couple of circles.

Now for the downer

My diff has locked up and wont release, Br Nursed it home at lunch and it was pretty bad turning at first but quite normal in a straight line, it seems to have loosened up a bit after the short drive, but by no means back to normal.

So anybody got any experience of stripping a diff down, what it might be etc. I’ve searched the VCA and only found one occurrence of something similar which turned out to be a spider gear seized to the shaft.

At the moment I’m not quite sure what that would require to fix and if I’m up to it. Or does anyone know of a good trans shop in the M3, A3 area that might know what they are doing with it. I guess worst case it’s off to a Chrysler dealer but I suspect their first response will be “yep new diff mate £££”

So anyone got any ideas? a spare diff?

Geff is the man..Did mine and never had a whine from it since..
Take the diff out yourself and get it up to Geff..
He can get the bits in you need from the US if unsure of what you need..He has done two for me now and as far as i know the second one s fine as well..

Thanks Baz. Their web site looks like they would know what they are doing. Looking at the service manual it looks like quite a job to do the whole thing with loads of special tools. But getting the unit out doesn’t look too hard so long as I don’t drop it on myself. I’ll jack it up at the weekend and have a better investigation.

Anyone know if Nad has done any work on a diff. Nad are you there?

Hi Dave,

Fair play on the donuts, good on ya, dont let any tire or chance of an empty carpark playtime go to waste in the name of Viper!

Yeah I've been though sevaral diffs, due to the specialist tools/work envolved send it to Hauser racing, they do a fab job, should be around the 200 quid mark. You can pull the whole pumpkin yourself, unbolt the all the harley splicer u-brackets, get the half shalfs pushed and tied well up out of the way, wap your lower frame rails with rag and secure with tape, then to pull the diff, bring it out drivers side 'arm' first, takes a bit of jiggling, then the whole thing just drops out. It's not that heavy. But, while laid under the car, drop it onto your belly to cushion/support the diff!!

While you got it apart, get the housing tapped and plugged, aids future fluid drain changes. When you bolt it back up use new harley splicer u-brackets as they are a stretch bracket, and you can use exising bolts, but locktight them in.

If you need any futher help, let me know, best wishes...

Cheers baz, I’ll bear that in mind if I can’t get a set in time for reinstall. I might be scrounging for a loan.

Chrysler re used mine when they did the recall so I’m not going to try pushing it for a third time.

Now I’m starting to think, would it be a good idea to go with a 3.55 gear set while its all apart, give it that extra bit of punch. Anyone got experience of if its worth it and does the speedo re-calibration box roe and Jon B sell work on the KPH speedos.

May as well look for a silver lining

If you're thinking about replacing the whole diff, you may want to look into a Quaife diff. Not cheap, but maybe worth it if you track the car a lot.

We use the 3.55 on our Venom 500 and whilst it makes 1gear to 5th gear give even more punch the down side for us is that on the 1/4 mile we are going into 5th gear at around 120mph,when a standard diff will hold the 1/4 mile in 4th.If 1/4 mile is not your thing then your find the 3.55 improves 4/5 gears,Venom will pull very strong in 5th from 120 through to 180+ but our car messed up on it speedo cal when the diff was fitted and makes for intersting reading at the higher speed and as Sarah was seeing 190mph at the end of the mile at TOTB2 when infact the timing radar recorded 178mph ! fast....but not fast enough...is it ever!but the speedo seems to read accurate up to 120mph.But Yep.....I think your like the 3.55 diff..we do!

On a fairly stock motor the 3.55 ratio is in my opinion the best to do. Gives a much faster feeling of acceleration, you will be ...but if you have a modified motor increase in BHP like a supercharger, the gearing is too low, you'll be spinning too much under acceleration in most gears! A cars only as fast as it can get grip to the tarmac! Still get the gears installed by Hauser, they know how to mesh them in etc.

Well after two afternoons out in the cold under the car, I finally got that BR out , I’m sure there is a knack to it, I just didn’t find it for quite a while. I think I must be a different build to Nad as there was no way it was coming out from under the car on my belly, even if it did squash it down a bit

I’ll give hauser a ring in the morning to see how much to fix and upgrade.

Update.

Well yep I broke it.

Dropped it off at Hauser racing and after stripping it down it looks like I managed to sheer of the spider gear shaft and bend it about 30 degrees, so its all locked up good and solid and they cant get the diff gears out. So it’s looking like a new diff carrier and gears will be going in. not too bad as they are apparently not much more then the gears anyway.

Well I also decided it would be rude to strip it all down this far and not put in 3.55 gears so out comes the credit card again.

Just got to wait for the parts from the US now and should get it back in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully get it back on the road just in time for Luton.
