two back tyres wanted
Discussion
Hi all ,Having just tried out the black gen one on pistonheads i bought it there and then .It needs two tyres on the back though if anyone can help ? After being after one since I discovered what my john Thomas was really for this gen one was the most awesome car I have ever seen or been in in my life .About as practical as a button on a sock but unlike nowt else ! Thanks to doctor bob for the recommendation and look forward to seeing the viper clan at a meet soon .No disrespect to all viper owners here but ,like me ,to buy one of these cars you simply cannot be a full shilling !
Congratulations, I'm sure you'll find viper ownership to be far from barmy 😄
Now it's time to join the Owners club, instructions are in the sticky post at the top of this forum, you'll find our small group very friendly and full of many years knowledge and advice on the cars.
Tyres are one of the tricky things for vipers. They are very sensitive to what rubber is on them so you will become adept at reading the dot codes on tyres; 4 digits that denote the week and year of production so 4513 would be the 45th week of 2013. Ideally all 4 tyres should be the same but in reality fronts will wear slower than rears or vice versa. Just be aware that if your new fronts are old and you put new on the rear the car will drive very poorly and require a lot of input. With new rubber all round (and assuming everything else is in order) the car will be very very good.
Having said this I think the gen 1 is 335 35 17 (?) not entirely sure but if so event tyres have them for the bargain price of £300 each (gen 3's which are 19's on the rear were £500 each last time I checked but are seemingly unavailable at the moment).

The size of the fronts should be 275/40 ZR 17
and the Rears should be 335/35 ZR 17

Thanks for the help you guys .I will be browsing the shown links this week to get myself some rubber on the back .It has new sport pilot ones on the front I think and yes ,the car felt bouncy over 60 mph on the back tyres that are barely legal .As if the wheels were well out of balance but im hoping that is just down to the tyres and nowt else .The car needs some early discipline though as it seems to say to me - welcome to viper ownership squire , but make one wrong twitch on my gas and I will bite you so hard you will get a great view of the nearest ditch !!
Welcome to viper ownership. September is an ideal month for new viper owners, air getting colder so more HP, leaves on the road so nice and slippery, road's getting cold, tires not able to get warm. did i mention the extra HP from the cold as it comes with a ton of torque too.
Even if you have had high BHP in the past, respect the Torque of 8L and go easy until April, and no i'm not kidding, in a viper you can only get the fast pedal to the floor from may-early sept and even then providing its dry.
Take it easy.....
Dave
ps sorry to preach, it really is a warm welcome, just prey the weather stays warm for a bit longer for some careful fun before the cold sets in and a light touch is required.

Keep the Gear changing smooth, don't try and rush it Make sure after you have selected 1st and 2nd that you palm the Gear Shift away from you and don't Grip the shifter, its really easy to floor the car in second, hit 3rd gear then at the top of 3rd you pull back the shifter back to find 2nd and not 4th!.....This is one of the biggest reasons for written off Vipers! Some people like to use a shorter shaft on the gear change, there are aftermarket shifters available for the T56 Gearbox by Hurst, MGW and Ipsco. Take your time getting used to it
The above tips are I believe important for viper owners .i reckon a lot of these cars were perhaps bought by excited owners who thought - RIGHT , lets see what she can do etc and ended up with disastrous results .On test driving the car yesterday i could sense imminent disaster was pending should i get carried away with this unfeasible monster i had decided to buy .According to a member of the viper scene some vipers were actually written off by the service mechanics who decided to "TEST DRIVE" THE CAR and ended up wrecking it ! What an experience that would have been for all concerned ! I WILL be taking it easy !!
Welcome to Viper ownership John - got your PM this morning so will email you club membership information over the next few days for The VOA (Viper Owners Associations).
In the meantime however, our patent website is here http://driveviper.com/ where you'll find all sorts of advice, events, spares and merchandise And our UK website is here http://driveviper.co.uk/ also with numerous links but geared more to inform readers what owning a Viper in the UK is all about.
We're a close-nit community and not much we can't deal with so don't be afraid to ask any questions and get involved.
And mind the Snake-bite - you've got a lotta torque back there so the slightest loss of attention will quickly result in your back half overtaking your front.
