At some point within the next 18 months or so, I'm planning on taking a '96 Viper RT-10 back to the UK from the US. How complicated a process will this be in terms of registering it in the UK? What modifications are required and what's the approx. associated cost? What does the legalisation process with the DVLA consist of and how complicated is this? Thanks in anticipation.

It sounds as though you are a returning resident, so if you've owned the car for 6 months, it would be free of duty and VAT. Allow for shipping (I paid $1k Oakland to Felixstowe by container), shipping insurance of around 2% of value, then UK import and customs agents (couple of £100), SVA prep (couple of £100, depending on how much you can do yourself) and finally the SVA test (£150)

A good resource is www.import-car.info/

Yes, I am indeed a returning resident. Thanks for the info - very helpful. Looks like about £2k max on top of the cost of the car should be ample. Just got to find the right car now...
