Hi Guys

just having an issue with the car running very hot , and i think i may have got air in the system :-(

fan cuts in and out fine , water pump seems to be circulating , dont think its a sensor fault as it fells really hot !!!!!!

done some investigating , and i read alot about "burping" the system , to get the air out , but no one seems to explain it

for a normal idiot like me , can someone put this into simple terms , on what to do ?????

thanks
Les

does the temp needle rize fast when accelerating, then drop when you back off ?
have you any fluid in the overflow bottle behind the front nose?

Hi
On the srt-10 it had a small grub screw on the thermostat cover to bleed off any air.

Not sure if earlier cars had this though.

Would do that from cold and warm it up a tad with the screw out.

Could check top and bottom hose for heat, should tell you the stat is ok.

cheers

Obviously the first thing is to check the overflow tank, but for the most part Gen2's are pretty much self burping once you get them full enough. The tricky bit is the filling until the thermostat opens. What they do rely on though is a tightly sealed system as the burping and expansion is into the tank in the facia and the coolant flow between it and the main system relies on the vacuum in the main system when its cooling. Any kind of leak in the main system will break this process and draw air in when the system as it cools rather than coolant from the expansion tank.

On mine I found the hoses on the heater adjuster (above the passenger foot well) were the cause of air getting into the system. Getting them tightly sealed and supported saw an improvement in the cooling efficiency. Put a cable tie between them so that they cant blow apart under pressure and make sure the clips are tight and sealed. I also put clips on all the hoses on the fill tank to ensure they were all sealed as well as some of them rely on just a push fit as they aren't all pressurised.

Its worth checking all the hose joints for any evidence of coolant, preferable after a bit of a run to give a chance for any to build up. Any evidence of coolant coming out even if just a little bit is evidence of a lot if air getting back in.

Another potential problem area is the fill bottle cap, its is sprung and pressure regulating for the flow off coolant to the expansion tank. Some have reported that replacing this has fixed their problems, likely because if its not working right it could be preventing the overflow or vacuum return flow of coolant.

still struggling . i have found the bleed screw on thermostat housing , but cannot move it !!!!!!!

No the temp does not rise fast then go back .

from cold start , drive 1.5 miles , gauge reading just short 230 ,
fan cuts in and out , so that works , heater works so assume pump ok, both top and bottom hoses hot , so assume radiator ok , no visable leaks , but engine sooo sooo hot !!!!
so assuming water not getting through to cool engine due to air block ???

heater adjuster hoses all tight and have always had cable tie on them

now for the numpy bit !!!!!!! cannot find the overflow tank !!??? do i have to take whole nose off to get to it ???

and is there another way of bleeding without using the bleed screw

any advice much appreciated

a very teasy and frustrated

turn the steering wheel full lock to the left, then go to the front right wheel well, at the front you'll see a big circular plug/grommet pull that out and with a torch you'll see the overflow bottle fluid level

you can add fluid to it if needed from the engine bay without taking the nose off

found it thanks ..... now the car is cold i would say there is about 1 1/2" - 2 " fluid at the bottom , looking at the service manual that would be about on the min mark ??? i think

is that good news or bad ?? does it confirm ny suspicion of an air block ?????

forgot to mention, when i started the car to turn the wheels , then turned it off , i could hear water running into that tank , is that normal ???

cheers

The water bottle behind the bumper is the overflow bottle for when the water gets hot and expands, It then flows into that bottle and as the car cools it returns back into the filler bottle (must be on a vacuum ) if the bottle behind the bumper is low then nothing can be transferred from one to the other.....
