Hope someone can help advise? As most will know, I’m emigrating to the USA on August 7th and a friend has agreed to ‘baby sit’ the Viper for a few months whilst I sort myself out with accommodation and how much insurance will be, etc. Problem is, today I find out that my insurance won’t cover me once I leave the UK.

So how can we get insurance on a car owned by me, but being garaged and driven by a friend???

insurance for a Euro GTS is around 1300 dollars
you'll need to get a certificate of conformity off Chrysler UK before it lands in CA

maybe you'll have to register the viper in your friends name to get around the problem

I thought that was cheap, considering you'll have no driving history, I'll email the info that Nigel/jan sent me when the yellow acr went over

You could get your friend to insure it in his name with you at the registered keeper and named driver. Hopefully you can get the V5 in your name but an overseas address, or worst case at his address. Big downside will be your NCD though as you would loose it after 2 years and he might not have one to apply. But to be honest I'm not convinced the price will change much anyway, any big jump will be him being the new main driver either way if its his policy or yours, I tend to think they just make up a bigger starting price if you have a big NCD so they end up with the same money they wanted anyway.

Correct Tony, but I think Neil was helping with insurance costs in the US as I have no idea what they are at the moment. Don't want to get the Viper there only to find insurance is ridiculous,

Just need to work out how I can insure it here...

In that case I am sure a Keeper can insure it. It does not have to be the registered owner.

Put it in reputable storage or a friends secure garage, (you can ship it to me if you want !) , don't let anyone drive it, immobilise it completely, and don't insure it...take a chance, it'll be fine.

Can't you just put it on laid up insurance??

Perhaps drop VHR a pm as Jan still keeps one of her cars insured over here despite now living in the US

I'd advise exactly as Brett says, Hagerty do a classic laid up insurance which I've used and covers the car at other premises, have a chat with them, they are a friendly car bunch on the other end of the phone:

Awesome Nad - gave them a call and they are happy to insure the vehicle in my name and store it at the friends address - conundrum solved :-)
