Insurance conundrum
Discussion
Hope someone can help advise? As most will know, I’m emigrating to the USA on August 7th and a friend has agreed to ‘baby sit’ the Viper for a few months whilst I sort myself out with accommodation and how much insurance will be, etc. Problem is, today I find out that my insurance won’t cover me once I leave the UK.
So how can we get insurance on a car owned by me, but being garaged and driven by a friend???

insurance for a Euro GTS is around 2000 dollars
you'll need to get a certificate of conformity off Chrysler UK before it lands in CA
maybe you'll have to register the viper in your friends name to get around the problem
Wow - is it really that much? Might have to sell it you'll need to get a certificate of conformity off Chrysler UK before it lands in CA

You could get your friend to insure it in his name with you at the registered keeper and named driver. Hopefully you can get the V5 in your name but an overseas address, or worst case at his address. Big downside will be your NCD though as you would loose it after 2 years and he might not have one to apply. But to be honest I'm not convinced the price will change much anyway, any big jump will be him being the new main driver either way if its his policy or yours, I tend to think they just make up a bigger starting price if you have a big NCD so they end up with the same money they wanted anyway.
just checked my old emails have a look at Progressive Insurance as you can do everything via the internet (you need a US address) that who Jan used, was $1300 not 2G, ill send you an email
Joel can you tell you the exact figure for a container to the LA docks

I think Graham means he will leave the car over here not in the USA. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong Graham
Correct Tony, but I think Neil was helping with insurance costs in the US as I have no idea what they are at the moment. Don't want to get the Viper there only to find insurance is ridiculous,Just need to work out how I can insure it here...

Put it in reputable storage or a friends secure garage, (you can ship it to me if you want !) , don't let anyone drive it, immobilise it completely, and don't insure it...take a chance, it'll be fine.
But what if said friends other car in the garage decides to burn itself and burn mine???I'd advise exactly as Brett says, Hagerty do a classic laid up insurance which I've used and covers the car at other premises, have a chat with them, they are a friendly car bunch on the other end of the phone:
