Oil for 97 GTS
Discussion
I switched the vette and Camaro over to 5w30. They were listed in the manual for colder temps anyway.
As I understand it the 0w,5w,10w is the cold winter viscosity, that will be way higher than the 30,40,50 viscosity of the hot engine. So to put it another way the 0W will be thicker cold than the 40 when its hot, so can't be too thin. Once the engine is hot the second number comes into play and that's where fatboy may be a bit too thick (his oil silly) as the 40 is thicker at 100c than the 30 that was OEM. But it will probably still be ok, as Neil says the 0w40 is the gen 4 recommended oil and many racers go up to 50 (nad) The problem with the 15w50 is its thick when cold as well so you have to be very careful while it warms up.
As it stands Fatboy will be fine to drive his car to the north pole and start it up stone cold, but will have to drive it hard to get the heat into the engine to get the oil viscosity down at the top end.
Disclaimer: I have fk all qualifications in oil, but I can read a wiki

No problem with that last bit, Neil will vouch for that As I understand it the 0w,5w,10w is the cold winter viscosity, that will be way higher than the 30,40,50 viscosity of the hot engine. You can get Mobil 1 Diesel 10-30 fully synthetic? I think you can use that? The Diesel oil has more cleaning additives in it so it might work better?
The cost of 10w30 over here is £16.80 per Qt! That is double the price....
Thinking I might try out the 0w40, I have certainly heard of people on the VCA switching to this.
I have had a look online and seen that you can either get "New Life" or "ESP" 0w40. Any opinions as to which would better suit our cars?
