I am about to purchase a Viper GTS, is there a common fault or any issue i need to look out for?

Have certain year vehicles any problems over other years, and which year Viper is the best to purchase.

Have there been recalls on Vipers and if so which years and for what problem, and how will i know if this work has been carried out.

Also what are the differences between a Chrysler Viper and Dodge Viper.

Thx.

Hi

Firstly difference between Dodge and Chrysler Vipers.

No difference as such only that the Viper was badged Chrysler for Europe to try and relaunch the brand in the early 90's with a bang. There are very few original UK vipers imported by Chrysler UK.

There are quite a few recalls for Viper and the most serious are to do with the chassis in a few different places around the steering rack mountings and the diff mountings. These recalls alone add upto some 90 hours...Call your local Chrysler dealer and they can check the data base to see if there are any outstanding on any given chassis number. They are obliged to undertake any that have not been performed.

Good Luck

There is a bit of difference between a Dodge and a Chrysler, the main thing is about 50 odd HP. Dodge cars have the full HP, around 450 where as the Chrysler has about 390.

A Chrysler is for European sale through dealerships with tighter noise restrictions which means a few extra parts to quiet it down restrictor in the air box, different ECU etc. This accounts for the loss in HP

If the car was made after Jan 01 there are no recalls, plus you get ABS. After 98 there was a cam change so you dont get the lumpy idle like the earlier cars

If your car is a Dodge you wont get warranty from Chrysler I'm afraid

On a GTS look for clear coat laquar lifting (going white) on wheels and gas cap, not much else which is good news

Yes quite right I'd forgotten about the BHP.

As far as I was aware changing the exhaust and intake took care of the horses that were lacking. It certainly made a whole lot of differnce when I changed mine...Do you happen to know whether that is fact re. the ECU?

ECU / PCM different calibration for Euro octane ratings only accounts for a loss of about 5 bhp. The intake restrictor (pulls out) and after cat exhaust are the main 'nasties' that reduce the bhp!
