Almost disaster....

Almost lost it..my drivers side wheel sheered off at 60mph,
how i didnt write off the car is a miracle, the bolts sheered off,
the wheel moved out, but never left the car, the disc and caliper
sat down on the inner base of the wheel and held on to it,
it was just a couple of inches from flying off down the road,

only thing mashed is the inner wheel paint, and a couple of studs snapped,
should be able to sort that though.

how it happened i have no idea, i tighten my nuts regularly.

Sam, I would be tempted to replace all the wheel studs just to be sure .

perhaps the tyre fitter has over torqued them some time in the past. if that is the cause then it is possible all studs were done at the same time.

To tell you the truth, i think someone loosened the nuts on that wheel, when i walked back down the road, i found 5 nuts
in the space of 5 yards, all of them screwed back on ok,
I just cant explain it
what makes me cringe, is that i was trying out a new map Sean Roe did for me earlier this morning and was going, lets just say, fast...

ps, anybody here have a couple of spare studs, or know the part number to get some more?

They are the same Dorman 610-395.

Will take them with me in the office, will try the PM a bit later again to give you my phone and address, not very keen on posting details on public forums.

cheers
max

Gen 1 and early Gen 2's were different ... early ones were open ended and covered via a centre cap on the rim..

Very luck with minimal damage - could have been soooo different.
So we've got a phantom wheel nut loosen'r scratchchin
Maybe someone was disturbed in the process of pinchin your wheels.......

Blimey you were lucky could of been so much worse.

Just a thought though with this sentence

Is it possible if your just checking they are tight and giving them a tweak to check that repeatedly this could have seriously over torqued them over time. Did you do this with a torque wrench and loosen and re-tighten them or just a tiny fraction turn with a breaker bar to make them just a little tighter?

I've had a similar (but not quite so bad) thing happen to be - three of the nuts sheared of my rear right wheel. I thought my diff had gone but from the clunking sounds - never thought for one minute that my wheel was about to come off! Luckily I was taking the car to the garage for it's MOT!

This ^^^^^^ and could the stud that broke suffered the damage from the loose wheel?

Glad the damage to you and your car was minimal mate.
