Hi guys,

Can anyone advise *roughly* (or better still actually from experience!) how loud / dB output you would expect from an '06, with 3" highflow cars, and Corsa side pipes. Everything else inc headers is stock.

Ive done a bit of a search, and people comment on the loudness / droning etc and post sound files, but not the actual average dB - which is of course key to getting on track days :0)

Ive seen the temporary noise reducing cones which can be fitted - but only to rear exit systems - anyone know of anything for side exits?

Also will the car still meet emissions regulations with the 4 stock cats replaced by the 2 highflows?

Thanks!

think i read my old '06 SRT coupe just passed the SVA at 100db, it had high flows and corsa track exhaust when it came in,
(would need to re-check though to be sure)

not sure what the 'track' version of the corsa means over the standard corsa

we know from the past db testing, the side exit is just as loud as the rear exhaust

Paul may have better idea, as he has done quite a trackdays in his SRT

I never replaced the cats on mine with hi flow as the Viper Wizard told me that the standard cats are pretty much hi flow so save your money, which I did.

In standard trim with stock exhausts at Goodwood for a <105 db track day it tested at 102, after I fitted the Corsa I ended up with 106 db on my personal DB meter but after a couple more low key track days I was never called in for testing.

On of the advantages that the SRT has is they can only measure one side at a time, I am sure if the pipes exited rear than the noise of the Corsa would be up near the 110 level.

My GT2 with BB headers, hiflows and BB exhaust measures 118 db.

Corsa is a bit of a bh to fit or rather remove the old one, try to beg borrow or steel an exhaust pipe cutter it would make the job of taking the old one off a price of cake, it would however be no good to refit, but the difference of the amount of heat soak in the car in the summer is amazing, still hot but not oven like.

Thanks guys, interesting..

So Viper - you made 100dB with high flows and corsa track, but Viper Paul you had standard trim and stock exhausts @ 102 rising to 106 with the Corsa on.

It does seem to be a bit of a minefield this - so many variables, so many different readings possible..

I just dont want to fork out for an expensive day, turn up and get black flagged..

Right now I have no idea what to expect - except that it could be anywhere in the range of 100 - 106dB +

if it isnt to far to travel, all of these trackday events allow you to turn up and measure your exhaust before hand.

over the years ive seen some have the db recorder setup on a measured metre, and some just guess a metre, some go straight out from the tips others at 45 degree angles so that probably accounts for all these fluctuations

if done properly 106, will narrow it down quite a bit to the trackdays you can actually attend

Goodwood was very strict, they are a piece of metal that touches the car and is attached to the meter so the meter reading is consistant and accurate per outlet.

Others such as Bruntingthorpe and some Silverstone organisers are not so strict and just use a handheld meter and guess the distance, some even take the reading at the back not realising it has side exhausts.

My R8 with a V8 measured 100 exactly with the flaps open.

Out of interest all UK SRT10's are over 100db and to solve this problem for approval Prodrive developed an additional exhaust piece with a silencer that goes below the boot, German cars must have the exhaust exit rear so they are even more strange.

the noise testing at the trackdays is very subjective and also the levels measured depend on many factors - air temp, humidity, exhaust temp, fuel type etc.

my viper has 3in pipes and no rear silencers (not sure if I have any cats or silencers in the side sills). It showed 100 db at the SVA, then went to a garage and we tested with the same digital meter as the one zs is suggesting on ebay - it read 99 db at 3/4. Went to bedford with msv and they measured 106 db, luckily found an exhaust place near by and they fabricated two baffles - measured at their place with the baffles on - 95 db, drove back to bedford and showed 100.9 db.

I have been many times there with my supercharged zm coupe and it has been tested anything between 99 and 104. So pretty much it's a gamble if there will be wind etc. MSV venues are very strict, the rest are ok and would allow even 105 db and more.

Went to the ring with my sc mustang running only cats and straight pipes....118 db, they pulled me out at the gates after the second lap. This year I have prepared long tube headers and straight pipes - 124 db, can't wait biglaugh
