Just as I predicted, this event is becoming a case of Tuners with no limit on budget against the rest.I,m thinking that this is the being of the end for TOTB.The event was never ment to be a shop floor for tuners to show what they can produce with say a One off Skyline imported from jap land running 1000bhp or an EVO with 700+ bhp that manages a few runs, blows every thing away before blowing itself to bits.If TOTB is to continue the success they should have a class for tuner only.Looks like these companys, many of which help sponser the event will be presenting the cups to themselves!Should this event be renamed TOTBT....10 OF THE BEST TUNERS!Mine not a sore looser, just looking for a fair play ,if i could affort to tune my Viper to 1200 bhp, wipe the board and not care if it blows up coz i can put it down to company expenses, developement and start again with an even more powerfull beast then i wouldn,t be typing this.....Sorry for the rant..but as you all know by now I do tend to say how i feel!
Just my £0.02 worth, but they should also stipulate that all competing cars are driven to the event rather than being trailered, that way a tuner cannot prepare a car that will only last for 1.25 miles before blowing up!
Maybe the rule should be the car must also be able to drive out again after the event otherwise it is disqualified.
Perhaps there should be a seperate class for tuner entered cars?

you should put your ideas to Chris, there is always room for improvements
I think Chris is aware all of these thoughts. I don't think he comes on Pistonheads, but all this about cars being trailored to the event as VHR has said, and that tuners with huge budgets are participating has been said on the supra forums, evo forums, impreza forums etc etc. But even if there is a class for tuners only, there's still some 1000bhp+ cars which are privately owned and privately built or tuner-built.
All of these issues have been brought up before, although I totally agree.
But where do you draw the line. An example was Simon Norris, with his Evo. While he is obviously a tuner, his car is his own private car also. He is a petrol head, and because his budget is more than some others does it make him any different???
Ruling people out, because they can afford to spend more on their car, and modifications isnt feasable.
I am totally a DIY'er and do all my own work, and spend virtually every penny on my car ( Im poor ), so in reality, I could never compete with a DIY'er, who is loaded.
The trailer issue has been brought up, but if enforced, he says those people would park the trailer outside and drive the car in.
Personally, I say let them have the hassle of leaving the trailer parked outside.
IMO, a road car should be pretty much full trim, full number of seats as it left the factory. Totally road legal tyres ( not DOT approved comp tryes ), pump fuel ( impossible to regulate ), tax, mot etc etc.
Id also try and rule out some of them Kit car thingys, unless they were actually manufactered and sold as a road car complete.
A road car should be a car that has been mass produced for the road, or at least very closely based on one.
Cars should also, as you say be driven to and from the event. If it blows up, as harsh as it may be, then tough.
TOTB has outgrown what I believe it was meant to be. Im glad to be a part of it, but I think it will be the last year I am.
If you take a look at how the MLR/Evo guys are taking it on their forum, it is laughable. To them, it is a major competition. Not the fun event for car enthusiasts it originally started as.
After this year, I'll continue working at my car, and just enjoy it. I will never be able to afford to compete with the big cars, so why waste my time, effort and money trying.
There is always someone who can buy/spend more on their car.
The event is almost about that now, money.

For those interested, I'm working at organising something similar to TOTB, but designed specifically to avoid the above situations occuring. Involves driving your car to & from the venue, and no sponsorship allowed, at an airfield......but not until 2005 if all goes well.
TV coverage also, with magazine coverage too........more news as this develops.

I think it was the now defunct Cars and Car Conversions drag racing series that came up with a good solution to the trailer queens. All cars had to take part in a cruise from the even site to a petrol station 15 miles away, switch off their engines, fill up their tanks, then restart their engines and drive back to the event location. Failure to complete any part of this meant disqualification from the event.
Varying the distance of the cruise could easily be done to make sure the cars were less likely to be temperamental specials. Filling up the tanks (say a 20-litre minimum fill) makes sure than at least some normal petrol is in there rather than Avgas, alcohol or whatever. An unassisted hot start at the petrol station(no pushing allowed) would also help eliminate poorly tuned machines.

Sounds like an idea, but would it work, with potentially 100+ cars ???
Also, define sponsorship ???
As you know, there are some cars at TOTB, and on the road generally, that carry stickers. Does this mean they are 'sponsored' or that the owner has bad taste ??
They may just be advertising their own business, car related or not. Im not one for stickers myself, so either way it wouldnt be a problem, but the rules would need to be clear as what sponsored means.
The other thing about making huge amount of rules, is that it could then turn very competitive, and ruin some of the enjoyment of the event.
Scrutineering should be done at an early stage, to try and sort out the DIY enthusiasts, from the mega buck, slick tyred, race fueled entries.
Then simply hold an event, with good coverage if possible, but mostly for fun.

I am taking TOTB III VERY seriously this year and have just spent all of my money (yes I am very poor now) on fitting a Twin Turbo kit on my Corvette. My car will not be the fastest car, it probably will not be the fastest around the handling circuit or indeed on the 1/4 mile.
This is not the point......I want to beat MY performance of last year and if this moves me up the listings overall then I will be very happy.
TOTB is flawed, but it is still a fantastic event. Similarly Trax is a great but flawed event which caters for different people.
I thoroughly enjoyed TOTB last year and have been looking forward to this years event since last year.
Where else can you spend £80 and do this legally?

I know what you're saying although note that the fastest car on the 1/4 mile and top speed last year was Keith Cowie's GTR32. He's not a tuner and doesn't have unlimited supplies of cash. From what I gather, he'll be there again this year with the car completely rebuilt - significantly lighter and more powerful. Hopefully he can beat the 'no-expense spared' tuners cars again...

Just have a look at the concept of Custom Car Street Eliminator in the drag racing world..
These cars have to be road legal and go on a "cruise" of anywhere between 16 and 27 miles..
have a look here for a rough idea of what the street eliminator boys go through...
Maybe that's an idea for TOTB?!?!
Edited to add..
TOTB is an event organised by Redline, a modified car magazine, and covered by Redline for publication in their mag.. Tuners are the main stay of their business, they pay for adverts, they build the feature cars and that all means that the kids buy the magazines, thus seeing the tuners work, saving up their pennies and giving them to the tuners to do some of that work to their car..
Whilst I don't disagree with this, I think people are right in asking for a tuners only side of the event, in an attempt to seperate those with bottomless pockets from those living in the real world!
my 2 penneth worth anyway..
