AEM engine management vs SCT
Discussion
I posted this on the VCA forum but with no joy so far. Maybe someone can help here?
I've just had a Paxton SC kit fitted and am trying to sort out my map now. I have an SCT controller and was initially thinking of going down that route (either getting a ready-made flash tune or buying the SCT Pro Racer software and making a map). But that seems an awful 'clunky' way of doing things (I can't log AFR wide-band, have to use data logging scan tool to see how the map looks then modify on the lap-top manually and re-upload that map).
So now I'm toying with the idea of AEM. Upsides - very user friendly, lot of functionality (some of which may become more relevant as I tune further), 'live' mapping and logging and (last but not least) wide-band AFR logging. But downsides - more expensive and, crucially, does it have enough outputs for the large number of injectors and ignition system of the Viper (I have a 1996 RT/10)?
Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks in advance!

not really any advice, but there a few here who had problems with the AEM, Joel went through several with his paxton.
Carl and Steves also packed up i beleive, Fishy recently had one fitted (all with Roes) Maybe thats finally been solved, Baz ditched AEM his and went with the SCT after advice from DC Performance
lots of tuning on the dyno by someone who understands the software is necessary

Thanks for the info! My problem with the SCT is it seems a very crude way to map, especially not being able to log WBL fuel ratio. I also don't like mapping on a wheel dyno - doesn't reproduce road conditions very well at all! But the AEM option also seems to have it's own problems, although I think there were generic issues (not just Viper-specific) that may have been resolved now in the newer management systems.

are you sure that the SCT cannot log WBL? I have one for my Mustang and you can plug WBL and log it with Livelink.Viper said:
what did Dan recommend ? have you also tried the alley site,
thats where all the engine modders hang out
Dan goes SCT but iteratively tuning using remote dyno output and a 'locked' flash tune. I'd rather have a car-specific map that's as high resolution as possible though.thats where all the engine modders hang out

$300 for a locked SCT from the right people, or $3500 for a AEM + tuning, guess it may come down how much you want to spend then
but tuning on the road, it takes hours to do and your using high revs frequently, quite dangerous id reckon
I can get the AEM for less than $3500 but yes, it will be a lot more costly.but tuning on the road, it takes hours to do and your using high revs frequently, quite dangerous id reckon
My tuner does all his mapping on the road. Much safer than on the dyno ultimately he reckons. The dyno-based map can be very divergent from a real world, road-based one. It is an art though and you have to trust who's doing it. Only a relatively small amount of time needs to be at high revs though.
