Fancying a ktm 990 adventure, as it looks the best offroad for a bike that can still do some mild touring with a pillion, will be doing a bit offroading along the way on our trips. What are peoples experiences of these?
How do the tenere and africa twin compare in the dirt?
Looking at the cheapest end of the market. Not afraid to do a bit of work on whatever i buy.
Apparently these are way more reliable than ktms of old and parts are readily available, would that be right?

Looking into it more, fk it, its got to be the 990. The tenere looks boring and the africa twins in my budget are 60hp with a 5 speed gearbox, you only live once.

Looking at 4.5k max so would only be the xrv750, so deffo made my mind up 990 all the way.

Thoughts on this?
To spend any more i would need to sell my crf450x and i am wary of doing that as I love broxburn bing, and i reckon a 990 might be a bit too heavy for there.
But then again, if its capable enough...

What are the differences between an r and a not r?
What benefits do the extra alphabet components get me?

Thanks. Probably going to get the 10 plate 990R, just sorting out the logistics.

I am 6 feet and stocky, and have been riding dirt bikes for 36 years, so hopefully it will be a good fit.
Just a shame to increase the budget i will need to sell my crf and my daughter can lift that easily and was learning how to ride a manual i doubt the 990 would suit for that, i think a 450 was already a big step up from a 50.

Its not a big jump in money to get a 2010r from a 2006 standard, and it looks like there are quite a few improvements and updates on the 2010 model year. If i buy an 06 i will always be thinking i should have spent the extra.
Never going back to carbs, so 950 is out the window.
Looks like decent 06s and 07s are all around 4500
The ones around 3500 look pretty fked and by the time i factor in my labour zero saving on the dearer ones, because i have more work than i have working hours in the week available i need to factor my own labour spannering a bike the same as i would charge customers. In that respect a fked bike would need to be super cheap to be worth a punt, and with these it seems peopke want strong money for tired examples.
Looking at it that way the 2010 R at 5k looks a banging deal, just the guy is hard to pin down to actually go and buy it.
Am I missing something in that way of thinking?

Sus.
Seller is fking me about for dates for collection, didnt tell me the mot was out despite saying he would collect me from the train station so i could ride home, there is a mileage discrepancy, 50+k on last 2 mots, 47k now?
And the date of first registration on a 10 plate bike is 2022? How can that even be possible?

Think I will keep looking, this slippery has already wasted a few days of my time.

Hopefully picking up an 1190 adventure R today. 280 mile ride to a job, and at the jobsite there is a decent bit of singletrack, then 70 mile ride home.
Hope its as described or it will be a depressing train ride home to get the van.

This thing is insane.
A superbike on knobblies.
Surprisingly capable and hilariously fun on singletrack.
Doing jumps on it is a weightlifting sesh where the crf was a cardio workout.
Although dropped it already. The previous owner fitted a lowering spring but included the standard spring. What he didnt mention was the sidestand is precarious now because its too long for the lowered suspension. Centrestand only until i can find the time to put the proper spring in.
