Leaning towards a Shoei Chimera as my next lid, to replace my battered old one.

Any sources out there can much undercut £199??

Well I say leaning, I really mean I can't quite decide to go with the trusty Shoei- or go for an HJC, or try a Roof, can't go the Arai route as they are way too pricy.

What would be your choices for sub £200?? (I much prefer seatbelt type fastnings like my current Shoei than DD ring too)

Alex, the chap we're staying with for the Nurburg trip has got a mate who trades in crash helmets. I'll find out the URL and put up a link.

try www.helmetpro.com. Beware they are jap lids, not Euro or US lids. They fit some people's head shapes, but not others. The contract is Kei. Other than that, try shopping on German internet sites, and ask them to mark the parcel 'gift' so customs don't charge you VAT and duty.

Someone in Germany, Holland, etc should be able to do you a EUR price the same as the GBP price, with about £15 postage.

Can you safely buy them like this or do you have to try the actual lid on before you buy?

You can safely buy them, but you do need to be aware that the internal mouldings for most helmets are different for each of their major markets - Europe, US and Asia - and as such each population type has a different head shape. I have bough this way, although would recommend using European shops, as these should stock the same type of lids you can buy in the UK. They will all have the latest safety standard, EC...., but will NOT have the ACU gold sticker onthe back, as they won't have come via Feridax or Pheonix (the UK importers of Shoei and Arai). You can get one by taking/sending your lid to the ACU at Rugby.

Good Luck.
